About the works


These popular works by Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710) originate from his Instrucción de música
sobre la Guitarra Española. In 1954 Joaquín Rodrigo composed his guitar concerto Fantasía
para un gentilhombre on themes from this source bringing popularity to the melodies.

Villanos, Fuga, Españoletas, La Cavalleria de Nápoles con dos Clarines, Las Hachas, Canarios

About the notation


Occasionally simplification of the rhythmic notation has been used to create a clean and
readable score. This results in a few notes having shorter sustain values so sustain as needed.
A degree of arranging for modern guitar has taken place. Most alterations include adding the
sixth string of the modern guitar to complete logical musical lines. In the case of La cavalleria
de Nápoles con dos clarines, I’ve also filled out the bass voice as the original texture loses
some of its charm on the modern guitar.

The small double barlines mark the end of sections and are in the original tablature. It is at
the player’s discretion to repeat the section adding ornamentation or free embellishment.
They are also helpful in understanding the phrasing.

An intense vibrato was considered a type of ornament in this era. I have marked these with
“vib.” on the score rather than using the criss-cross symbols in the original tablature. The
player may or may not wish to ignore these as the result is varied on the modern guitar.

Slurs
All slurs in this edition are editorial with the exception of a few slurs in the original Baroque
tablature of Cararios.

Right Hand Fingering: p = thumb / I = index / m = middle / a = ring / c = pinky

Left Hand Fingering: 1 = index / 2 = middle / 3 = ring finger / 4 = pinky

Barre Abbreviations: BV3 = Barre at the 5th fret, over three strings (E, B, G Strings)
BV5 = Barre at the 5th fret, over five strings (E, B, G, D, A, Strings)
BIII2 = Barre at the 3rd fret, over two strings (E, B Strings)

Piv. = Pivot Barre, a technique where the player either pivots into a
barre while holding a note, or releases a barre while allowing certain
notes to sustain.

Hinge or hBV = Hinge Barre, a barre only over some of the strings while
allowing open strings to sustain. Often used to sustain a note while
preparing for a barre, or prepare for a note that would require an
awkward jump.

Position Numbers: II. = play in second position (1st finger around the second fret)
V. = play in fifth position (1st finger around the fifth fret)
VII. = play in seventh position (1st finger around the seventh fret)

String Numbers: 1 = 1st string (E)


3 = 3rd string (G)
5 = 5th string (A)

Dynamics 𝒇 - Forte (Loud)


𝒑 - Piano (Soft)
𝒎𝒇 - Mezzo Forte (Medium Loud)
< - Crescendo (Getting Louder)

> - Decrescendo (Getting Softer)

Signs Fine = Finish, end of the piece


D.C. al Fine = Return to the beginning of the piece and play to the fine.
