SECTION_I
Q1 A Answer the following.
i Explain Joule's experiment with respect to first law of thermodynamics.

ii Using steady flow first law analysis prove throttling process is isenthalpic 4
process. Also mention assumption made while doing
unuiyrir.
B In water cooling tower air enters at a height of I m above ground level and leaves
at a height of 7 m. If
the inlet and outlet velocities are Z0 mls and 30 m/s
respectively. Water enters at a height of 8 m and leaves at a height of 0.8 m.
The
velocity of the water at entry and exit are 3 m/s and I m/s reipectively. Water
temperatures are 80'c and 50oc at entry and exit respectively. The air
temperatures are 30oC and 70'C at entry and exit respectively. The cooling
tower
is well insulated and a fan of 2.25 kW drives the aiithrough the cooler. F]nd
the
amount of air per second required for I kg/s of water flow.

Q2 A Explain the reversible heat engine, refrigerator and heat pump.

B Define and classify energy reservoirs. Write Kelvin Plank statement and
Clausius 6
statement of thermodynamics. what is perpetual Motion Machine second
kind?

B Mention conditions of reversibility. Explain Carnot cycle using Carnot heat
engine. Also show it on p_v diagram.
C A reversible refrigerator receives 20 kW of heat from a cold reservoir, has a work
input of 25 kW aird rejects heat to a liot reservoir. Find (a) the ratio of
temperature of hot and cold reservoir (b) the temperature of the cold reservoir,
givert ternperature of hot reservoir as 300 K (c) coefficient of performance.

B calculate the entropy change of universe as a resurt of placing a
(a) A copper block of 600 g mass and 150 J/K heat capacity at 100
"C is placed
in a lake at 8oC.
(b) Two such blocks at 100 and OoC are joined together.
C 3 kg of ice at -15oC is exposed to atrnosphere at 35"C. The ice melts
and comes
into thermal equilibrium with atmospheie. Calculate the entropy change of the
universe. Take co of ice = 2kllkgK and latent heat of fusion of ici:::iUlt<g

Q4 A Answer the following.
i What do you understand by mechanical equilibrium and thermal equilibrium? 4
ii Briefly explain quasistatic process. 4
B 1.2 kg of gas at 14 bar and 27oC is expanded to three times the original volume 6
according to the law pvr3 : c. calculate (i) original and final volume (ii) final
temperature and pressure.
Q5 A Explain construction and working of separating and throttling calorimeter . 6
B Steam at 9 bar and dryness fraction of0.9 expands at constant pressure until the 6
temperature is 300"C. Calculate the work done and heat supplied per kg of steam.

B A petrol engine has swept volume of 500 cm3 and clearance volume of 55cm3. At 6
suction pressure and temperature are 1 bar and 30oC respectively and maximum
temperature in the cycle is 1450'C. Calculate air standard efficiency and mean
effective pressure of the cycle.
C Draw Otto, Diesel and Dual cycle on p-v diagram and T-s diagram. 6

Q6 A Mention modifications carried out in Rankine cycle compare to Carnot cycle. 6


Why these modifications are required?
OR
A A Rankine cycle has steam entering the turbine at 150 bar and 500"C. If the 6
exhaust pressure is 0.06 bar and all processes are reversible. Calculate (i) Turbine
work (i) Heat rejected.
B Answer the following.
i What is dead state? Mention its importance. 3
ii What do you understand by high grade and low grade of energy? 3
C A system at 800 K receives heat at 7200 kJ / min. from a source at 1000 K. The 6
temperature of atmosphere is 300 K. Assuming the temperature of source and the
system remains constant during heat transfer, calculate increase in entropy and
decrease in availability.
