5. Assume suitable data if necessary and clearly state the sarne

SECTION- I
Q-1 (A) One cylinder of a rotary engine is shown in the I14l
co-2 configuration diagram shown in figure 1. OA is fixed
BL5 crank, 200 mm long. OP is the connecting rod and is
52omm long. The line of stroke is along AR and at the
instant is inclined at 3Oo to the vertical. The body of the
engine consisting of cylinders rotates at a uniform
speed of 400 rpm about a fixed center A. Determine
1) acceleration of piston inside a cylinder
2) angular acceleration of connecting rod
(B) Locate all instantaneous centers for the mechanism [O8]
co-2 shown in figure 2. Determine the angular velocity of link
BL5 3 for the crank speed of 500 rpm

Q.2 (A) Discuss in detail various, inversions of single slider t06l

(A) Justify that Peaucellier mechanism can produce exact [06]
co- 1 straight iine motion
BL3
{B} A load of 15kN is raised by means of a screw jack. The [O8]
co-3 mean diameter of the square threaded screw is 42 mm
BL5 and the pitch is 10 mm. A force of 12ON is applied at
the end of a lever to raise the load. Determine the length
of the lever to be used and the mechanical advantage
obtained. Is the screw self-locking? Take p = 0.12

Q.3 (A) What is uniform wear theory? Derive the expression for tOSl
co-3 the friction torque considering uniform wear theory for
BL2 a flat collar.
(B) Evaluate mechanical efficiency of screw jack lo6I

(B) A power screw is driven by an electric motor moves a 106I
CO-3 nut in a horizontal plane when a force of 80 kN at a
BLs speed of 6 rnm/s is applied. The screw is of single start
thread of 8 mm pitch and 48 mm major diameter.
Determine the power of motor if the coefficient of friction
at the screw threads is O. 1.

SECTION II
Q.4 (A) Develop the profile of a carn operating a knife edge [1OI
co-3 follower having a lift of 30 mm. The cam raises the
BL5 follower with SFIM for 1500 of the rotation followed by a
period of dwell for 6O0. The follower descends for the
next 10Oo rotation for the cam with uniform velocity
again followed by dwell period. The cam rotates with
uniform velocity of L2O rpm and has a least radius of
2O mm.
(B) Derive the expression for velocit5r and acceleration of the [06l
co-3 follower when it moves with simple harmonic motion
BLz
OR
(Bt What is a displacement diagram of follower? What are [06l
co-3 commonly used profiles for displacement diagrams?
BL2 Why is it necessary to draw it before drawing a carn
profile?

BL5 displacement of the input and the output link
0t =25",02 =35o,gg = 50o, et:30o,gz= 4Oo,gs = 60o
(Bt In a thrust bearing, the externa-l and internal diameters tOfl
co-3 of the contacting surfaces are 320 mm and 200 mm
BL5 respectively. The total axial load is SOkN and the
intensity of pressure is 350 kN/mz. The shaft rotates at
400 rpm. Taking the coefficient of friction as 0.06,
calculate the power lost in overcoming the friction. Also
find the number of collars required for bearing.
OR
(B) A belt drive transmits 8 kW of power from a shait [O?i
co-3 rotating at 24O rpm to another shaft rotating at 15C
BL5 rpm. The belt is 8 mm thick. The diameter of the smaller
pulley is 600 mm and the two shafts are 5m apart. The
coefficient of friction is 0.25. If the maximum stress in
the belt is limited to 3 N/m2, find the width of the belt
for open belt drive.
