Introduction Freud’s theory of personality is known as
Psychosexual Stages. Freud emphasize on
biological drives and unconscious in this
theory.
Age : Birth - 1 At this age, Freud mentions that infants
go thru the Oral Stage. The infant will
gain pleasure by tasting, eating and
sucking. Difficulty in this stage may cause
fixation as smoking, overeating or
passivity.
Age : 1 – 3 At Anal stage, the child learns to control
the bladder and bowel movements. If the
stage is not archived, this may cause
fixation as orderliness or messiness.
Age : 3 – 6 Phallic stage focus on Genitals of the
child. They start to learn the differences
of their gender. Also, they will be
resolving Oedipus complex (Boys) and
Electra complex (Girls).
Age : 6 – 1 At Latent stage, the child interacts with
his/her friends and focus on activities
such as hobbies and school activities.
Age : 12 - 18 At Genital stage, the child archives
puberty and focuses on their sexuality.

Erikson’s theory of personality is known as
Psychosocial Stages. Unlike Freud, Erikson
emphasizes on social experience throughout
one’s lifespan.
Trust vs Mistrust stage explains the importance
of trust between the infant and their caregiver.
The infant should be provided with basic
physical and emotional needs. If they were not
able to depend on their caregiver, they may
develop mistrust of others.
Autonomy vs Shame & Doubt stage explains
that the child of these age learns self-care
skills like toileting and eating by themselves.
Overly controlled child will be doubting
themselves.
At Initiative vs Guilt stage, child take more
control on their environment by interacting
with other children. Child who struggles in this
stage, may have a feeling of guilt.
At Industry Vs Inferiority stage, a child starts
to develop competence in school and others.
They also will have pride in their ability. Failure
in mastering this stage will cause the child to
feel inferior of themselves.
At Identity vs Role Confusion stage, the child
starts to develop new attitude and explore
different roles. They also adapt to their
puberty changes. Those who struggle in this
stage remain confused about who they are and
their role in this society.
At Intimacy vs Isolation stage, young adult
seeks for companionship and intimate
relationship. Failure at this stage will cause a
person feeling lonely and isolated.
At Generativity vs Stagnation stage, a person
starts to mentoring others, developing their
family relationship and focus on their
occupational achievements. They wish to
contribute to the society.
At Integrity vs Despair stage, a person looks
back to their life and develops self-acceptance.
Failure in this stage may cause guilt and self-
rejection.
