Product Development
The section that is assigned to design new footwear samples for potential buyers is known as the product
development section. In the second week of my internship program, I have worked with the product development
team to learn the process of designing a men’s shoe.

This task is highly creative. Therefore, to begin the designing, large art papers and pencils were used initially to
draw the design. However, the shoe consists of multiple parts and they all have different names. Getting
recognized with all the parts is essential in designing, because having the knowledge of these names makes the
task organized and improves the designer’s productivity.

The designing starts with drawing the bottom outsole. It can’t be random, the size of the heel, toe bumper, and
the gap between the welt and gound must be considered. Then we draw the designs that goes on top lift and
bottom of the outsole. These designs are vital to get friction while walking on slippy surfaces. Once the bottom
part is designed, we moved on to design the upper parts, vamp, quarter, backstray, and, counter. As soon as the
rought paper design is ready, we start working on Photoshop to make it look real. There, we do some additional
work such as trying different colors, designing the shapes of different parts especially quarter and the toe cap
area. That’s how the final design was ready for approval.

Key learning of the week

While working with the product development team, I have learned about all the different parts of the shoes.
 A Toe Cap is the frontal portion that covers the toes. If there’s any design goes on the toe cap, that’s
known as Medallion. The portion that goes on the side line below the Toe Cap is called Plain-Toe.
These few parts altogether is known as the Vamp.
 The outer middle portion that starts after Toe Cap to tie the laces is called Throat. The free leather inside
the throat is called the Tongue. This instep is covered by a panel called Saddle. The small holes to use
the lace is known as Eyelet punch. Sometimes, if the buyer prefers, metal or rigid leather known as
Eyelet is used to decorate these holes.

 The sole is not as simple as it looks, there are several useful parts of it that are not visible from outside.
Insole is the leather made removable portion of the sole that pads the foot and Outsole is the hard bottom
part that touches the ground. Along with these parts, two insole boards are used to keep the shoe to carry
the weight of the person without losing it’s shape and one SBR & one EVA foam-made insoles, to mollify
the hardness of outsole. The extra thick rear outsole part, usually made of rubber or stacked leather is
called Heel and the bottom of Heel is called Top Lift. The portion that connets the Heel with the frontal
bottom outsole is called Welt. Normally this portion remains a little above the ground.
 The inner part of the Vamp that goes all around inside the shoe is called Lining.
 A Backstay is the vertical stiff panel that shapes the stability to the back of the shoe and the bottom rear
portion is called Counter.
 Lastly, the topline that gives the opening structure to insert our feet to wear the shoe is known as Collar.

This knowledge is obligatory to acquire for everone working in the Footwear industry, because these terms are
essential to know not only in product development but also while communicating with the key stakeholders.
