Human Resource Management Assignment

Ques1. How does the market driven approach illustrate that HR has strategic,
operational and administrative roles at SYSCO?
Ans. The market-driven approach illustrated that HR has strategic, operational, and
administrative roles at SYSCO by having Human Resource identify ways it could assist
regional operations. Sysco took the initiative to develop programs and services to meet needs
in a regional perspective. They had a strategic plan to build their organization and the key
was to have the regional operations buy the corporate HR services wherein the regional
managers will have the opportunity to decide whether they want to buy the corporate HR
services or not.

The creation of a Virtual Resource Centre provided services to employees and managers in
the form of gathering data and Human Resource activities and provide the data to the
operating managers. With the development of employee climate surveys, HR was able to
address attitudes and concerns that help the organizations work with employees to provide
positive changes. As a result, there was an increase in safety which in turn, caused a 30%
decrease in workers’ compensation and a savings of $10 million per year. SYSCO also
addressed problems and created a positive work environment.

Ques2. Discuss what types of HR changes could have affected reductions in workers
compensation expenses, employee turnover and increases in customer satisfaction.

Ans. In order to reduce workers' compensation, Human Resource should make it certain to
evaluate their work facility, encourage workers to report anything broken or unsafe.
Supplying safety equipment help employees perform their jobs in a safe, timely fashion.
Also, hiring consultants can help in developing significant improvements to the companies
safety records. For a company to reduce employee turnover, the company has to respect their
employees first and foremost. It would be reliable if Sysco had its employees balance work
and life (flexible schedule provides more productivity and less stress.) Conducting behaviour
based testing and competency screenings in order to select the right candidate for the job.
One can also use engagement tools to help employees. These can include a satisfaction
survey administered by a third party, clearly defined training opportunities and/or committee
creation for certain aspects of your firm. We can even ask for feedback and opinions on a
relevant matter to help reinforce the channel of communication, and establish their position as
an active participant. Anything that adds value to an individual’s experience as an employee
will help reduce employee turnover. Even the smallest gestures and rewards help to improve
the work environment.
