TYPES OF JIGS
Classes of Jigs
Jigs may be divided into two classes :
1. Boring Jigs :
Used to bore the holes which are either too large to drill or
of odd sizes.
2. Drill Jigs :
Used to drill, Ream, Tap , Chamfer, Counter bore, Counter
sink, Reverse spot face or Reverse counter sink.
The basic is same
for
all the operations
with change in
bush size.

Types of Jigs
Drill Jigs may be divided into two types :
Open and Closed.
Open Jigs :
For simple operations where, work is done only on side of
the part.
Closed Jigs :
are used for parts that must be machined on more than one
side.

Template jigs
• Templates are least expensive and simplest form of
jigs

• Such jigs have same profile as the work-piece

they serve as layout guides, fits over, on, or into
the work

• They may or not have bushings. Usually the whole jig

plate is normally hardened.

Template jigs
• Generally made without clamp & depends on
pins, nests / part shapes to reference them to
the part.

• Used extensively for low – volume production

such as prototype work or short run jobs

• Used for accuracy and not for speed

Plate jigs
• Plate jig in construction is similar as that of
template jig, but with certain improved features.

• Drill bushes and clamping provision is

incorporated in plate jig.

• Plate jigs are employed to drill holes on large

parts maintaining accurate spacing with each
other.(‘CD’)

Table Jig or Turn over jig
• Plate jigs made with legs to raised legs for
large work are called a table jig

• Used when work piece does not have a suitable

resting (supporting) face

• The disadvantage of turnover jig is that the

drilling forces are directed towards the
clamping devices

Table Jig or Turn over jig
• Turn over jig is so named because the work piece
is located from the face that is to be drilled and
clamped in the jig. Then the jig is turned over for
drilling.

• This jig is also known as open jig as the work

piece is not having any enclosure of jig body
around it so, no problems in chip disposal.

Leaf Jig
• Leaf jig is similar to box jig with jig bush plate as a
hinged leaf

• Jig plate can be swung open aside to provide

clear path for loading & unloading work piece
from the top

• Jig plate has a positive resting face to ensure

that the axes of bushes are vertical during drilling.

• Jig Plate must be clamped aginst the positive

resting face by an eye bolt / quarter turn screw

Leaf Jig
Main differences

• Leaf jigs are comparatively smaller than box jigs

• Not completely surround the part.

• Usually equipped with a handle for easier

handling.

Angle Plate jig

• This type of jig is of channel
shaped & sometimes is made
from a standard channel section
material.

• The work piece is fitted within the

channel. It is located and
clamped by rotating knurled knob.

• Channel jig is limited to work

• Channel jigs are the
simplest form of box jig

• The work is held

between two sides and
machined from the third
side.

• In some cases, where

jig feet are used, the
work can be machined
on three sides.

Pot Jig
• Pot jig body is in the form of a pot in which the work
piece is supported and clamped.

• Circular work pieces having both external and

internal diameter suitable for location purposes
are drilled in pot type jigs.

• The body in the form of a pot carries the work

piece and also carries the bush plate.

Box Jig or Tumble Jig
• This type receives its name from its shape which
resembles a box.

• Box jig contains bushings on two / more sides,

permitting drilling holes on different sides of part,

• After one face is drilled, the next side may be

drilled by simply toppling the jig to expose this to
the drill spindle. Hence the name tumble jig.

• The advantage of tumble jig is that less part

handling.

 Trunnion Jig
• A trunnion jig is similar to BOX jig.

• When a large sized work piece is to be drilled on

several faces, it is mounted in a trunnion jig so that
the faces requiring drilling operations can be turned
easily & positioned.

• Every time, the jig is rotated and it is locked so that

the face in which the hole is to be drilled is
absolutely horizontal.

Post Jig
• The post jig is used to locate the drill plate. The
swing washer enable the drill plate to be removed
without removing the hand nut.

Index Jig
• Indexing jigs are used to accurately space holes or
other machined areas around a part.
• For indexing either the part itself or a reference plate
and a plunger.
• Larger indexing jigs are called rotary jigs.

What is a duplex jig
Jigs designed and constructed so that two parts may be
machined.

As one part is machined, the other part is loaded or

unloaded.

When the first part is complete, the second part is moved to

the cutter and the first is unloaded and a new part loaded.

This process is continued until all the parts are completed.

Multi-station jigs
The main feature of this jig is how it locates the work.

While one part is drilled, another can be reamed and a

third counter-bored.

The final station is used for unloading the finished

parts and loading fresh parts.

This jig is commonly used on multiple-spindle

machines..

Multi-station jigs
There are several other jigs that are combinations
of the types described.

These complex jigs are often so specialized that they

cannot be classified.
Regardless of the jig selected, it must suit the part,
perform the operation accurately, and be simple
and safe to operate.
