Template jigs
• Template jig is the simplest & most basic jig used in
production.

• Such jigs have same profile as the workpiece & so they can
serve as layout guides for locating holes & contours / as a jig
for low speed production.

• Generally made without clamp & depends on pins, nests /

part shapes to reference them to the part.

• Used extensively in low – volume production such as

prototype work or short run jobs.

Plate jigs
• Plate jigs is similar in construction as that of template jig, but
it is an improvement of the template jig.

• Drill bushes are incorporated on the plate jig. The plate jigs
are employed to drill holes on large parts maintaining
accurate spacing with each other.

Leaf Jig
• Leaf jigs generally have a hinged jig (bush) plate.

• Jig plate can be swung aside to provide clear path for

loading & unloading workpiece from the top.

• Jig plate must have positive resting face to ensure that the
axes of bushes are vertical during drilling.

• Jig Plate must be clamped against the resting face by an

Leaf Jig

• Leaf type jigs are particularly suitable for workpieces having

location surfaces and holes to be drilled on opposite sides.

Angle Plate jig

• Angle plate jigs are primarily used to machine parts that

cannot be easily machined with plate type tooling.

• Sizes are varied according to size of work pieces. They

can accommodate parts of various shapes.

• The analysis and evaluation of work piece begins before

designing the angle plate jigs.

Channel jigs

• This type of jig is of channel shaped & sometimes is made

from a standard channel section material.

• The workpiece is fitted within the channel. It is located and

clamped by rotating knurled knob.

• Channel jig is limited to workpieces having simple

symmetrical shape.

Pot Jig

• Pot jig body is in the form of a pot in which the workpiece

is supported and clamped.

• Circular workpieces which have both an external and an

internal diameter suitable for location purposes are
drilled in pot type jigs.

• The body in the form of a pot carries the workpiece and

also carries the bush plate.

Turn over jig or Table Jig
• Turn over jig is so named because the workpiece is located
from the face that is to be drilled and clamped in the jig.
• Then the jig is turned over for drilling.

• This jig is also known as open jig as the workpiece is not

having any enclosure of jig body around it so, no problems
in chip disposal.

• When work piece does not have a suitable resting face

• The disadvantage of turnover jig is that the drilling forces

are directed towards the clamping devices.

Box Jig or Tumble Jig
• This type receives its name from its shape which resembles
a box.

• When a box jig contains bushings on two / more sides, for

the purpose of drilling hole on different sides of the part, it
is referred to as a tumble jig.

• After one face is drilled, the next side may be drilled by

simply toppling the jig to expose this to the drill spindle.

• The advantage of tumble jig is that less part handling.

Trunnion Jig

• A trunnion jig is similar to BOX jig.

• When a large sized workpiece is to be drilled on several

faces, it is mounted in a trunnion jig so that the faces
requiring drilling operations can be turned easily &
positioned.

• Every time, the jig is rotated and it is locked so that the

face in which the hole is to be drilled is absolutely
horizontal.

Post Jig

• The post jig is used to locate the drill plate. The swing
washer enable the drill plate to be removed without
removing the hand nut.

Angular Post Jig

• The figure shown is an angular jig of welded construction.

• The drill bush is extended & shaped to prevent drill run,

and yet allow removal of the work piece.

• Clamping nut is of quick action type because of the

smallness of work piece bore demands that the nut be
removed when the work piece is removed.

Sandwich Jig

• Sandwich jig is almost similar to a plate jig, only difference

is locating & clamping elements are fixed on back plate.

• Back plate allows the jig to hold very thin parts that could
bend / distort under tool pressure.
