Plagiarism Notes

● Plagiarism is when you take someone else’s words from a website, book, or source and

try to patch them as your own words.

○ It may be easy to do since you can copy and paste but it isn’t good.

● In other words, according to The Instrument of Student Judicial Governance, “Plagiarism

in the form of deliberate or reckless representation of another’s words, thoughts, or ideas

as one’s own without attribution in connection with the submission of academic work,

whether graded or otherwise.”

● Verbatim is where you try to write things word for word and pass them off as your own.

● In-text citations are things like (Smith 48) at the end of the text evidence or source that

you are using at the end of your paragraph.

○ Smith is the author’s last name and 48 is the page number.

● Four things that you should do before writing:

○ Did the words come from a magazine, book, newspaper, song, TV show, movie,

website, game, email, or advertisement?

○ Did the words or ideas come from an interview or a conversation?

○ Did you use exact words?

○ Did it come from a picture or graph?

● For any of these, you should use quotation marks.

● The words that should be under a photo, chart, or graph are Source:

● 1) If you go word-for-word, use quotation marks.

● 2) Paraphrasing means using your own words and not what someone else did.

● 3) Tell your teacher the name of the information’s source.

● You should have both in-text citations and work cited

● You don’t have to give credit for common knowledge.

● Make sure that the margins are 1 inch on all sides.

● Always use Times New Roman 12 font.

● You want the header to be at the end of the paper and have your last name and put the

page number(starting at 1).

● The entire document should be double-spaced.

● Your name should be first.

○ Then your professor’s name

○ Then the Class and the section

○ Then the date: September 26, 2022(I usually do 26 September 2022).

● The title would be capped for all words

● If it is your own title:

○ Do not underline it.

○ Do not put it in quote marks.

○ Do not boldface it.

○ Do not use all caps for it.

● Under the title, you should have a double space, and then start typing your work.

● Press the tab button and then start the paragraph.

● Perdue Owl is a great resource for the formatting of citations for all types of

texts/sources.
