TO IDENTIFY THE VALUES OF RESISTANCE USING

HARDWARE TOOL.
LAB #1
TITLE:
TO IDENTIFY THE VALUES OF RESISTANCE USING HARDWARE TOOL.

OBJECTIVE:
 To identify the values of resistance using color codes.
 To identify the values of resistance by using digital multimeter (DMM).

METHODODLOGY:
There are two ways to find the resistance value of a resistor

 By using color codes.

 By using Digital Multimeter (DMM).
1. By using color codes:
 Take the resister from sample.
 Identify the colors in 1st three bands. Third color is the multiplier. And forth band gives the
tolerance.
 Take three different resisters to get three different values of resistance.

2. By using digital multimeter (DMM):

 Take a digital multimeter and switch ON it.
 Select a minimum range of resistance on it.
 Measure resistance by connecting 1 probe (black wire) of meter to common slot and 2 probes (red
wire) to ohm. Then connect other ends of both probe to resistor ends.
 If the multimeter shows a reading 1 which is less than the calculated reading then change next
available range and measure the value of resistance.
 Repeat the previous step until get the approximately calculated reading.
 Check whether both readings are equal.

RESULTS:

Sr.No. Resistance value Difference

(kΩ)
Calculated Measured
(kΩ) (kΩ)
1. 5.6 5.54 0.06
2. 2.6 2.68 0.8
3. 3.3 3.28 0.02

CONCLUSION:
The color bands on the body of the resistor tell how much resistance it has. In short tolerance gives a
range in which the value of resistance is to be expected but on the other hand DMM gives an accurate or
precise value of resistance.
