1.0 OBJECTIVE
At the end of this lab session, student should be able to:
1. Find the value of a resistor and its tolerance by its color code.
2. Find the value of a capacitor by its value code.
3. Use the datasheet to determine electronic components function and
specification.
4. Use measuring instruments for electronic components measurement and
testing.
5. Record the measuring values correctly.

3.0 INTRODUCTION
All the electronic components especially semiconductor should be in good
condition before any construction in electronic circuit. All students must know how to
test any electronic components to make sure that component can properly work. Related
with this topic, this workshop come out with some electronic components testing such as
resistor, capacitor, and transistor based on theories.

Basic electronic components explanation and information as below:

i) Resistor
The component that has electrical resistance to control current flow. Resistor is
passive element component and made by carbon or metal film ceramic. The
function of resistor is to control current flow through it. Unit of resistor is Ohm
(Ω). Resistance value is represented by color code at resistor body. Size of
resistor determines the power of resistor, so bigger size contributed more power.

ii) Capacitor
The capacitor is a device that can store electrical charge, thereby creating an
electrical field which in turn stores energy. Unit of capacitor is Farad (F).

 Types of capacitor are:

a) Polar or electrolytic (has polarity; +ve and –ve)
b) Non-polar or non-electrolytic (no polarity)
c) Variable
 Testing equipment: ohmmeter, LRC/RCL meter, capacitance meter
 Capacitor value code is as represented in Figure 4 below:

iii) Transistor
Transistor is an active component, normally used as an amplifier and switch in
electronic circuit. Transistor consists of three legs, known as Base (B), Emitter
(E), and Collector (C) legs.

resistors in Table 1. Write your answers in Table 3. (Assume the supply
voltage is 10 V)
5. Measure the current passing through each resistor in Table 1 using digital
multimeter and record your findings in Table 3.
