BENG 3013 SEMESTER 1 SESSION 2017/2018

Assignment
Question 1

For the circuit shown in Figure 1 below :

a) Assign branch voltages and branch current variables to each element in the network in Figure 1. Use

associated reference directions.

b) How many linearly independent Kirchoff’s voltage law (KVL) equations can be written for this network?

c) How many linearly independent Kirchoff’s current law (KCL) equations can be written for this network?

d) Formulate / construct a set of KVL and KCL equations for the network. (Construct simultaneous

equations).

e) Assign nonzero numbers to each branch current such that your KCL equations are satisfied.

f) Assign nonzero numbers to each branch current such that your KVL equations are satisfied.

Question 2
ANSWER

Question 1

(a) It’s up to student to assign loop and branch current themselves.

(b) 2 Equations

(c) 3 Equations

(d) Depending on your assignment of branch variables, your answer may differ.

KVL: VA + VE + VC + VB = 0, VC – VD = 0

KCL : iB-iC-iD = 0, iA-iB = 0, -iA+iE = 0

(e) iA = iB = iE = 0.2A, iC = 1A, iD = -0.8A

(f) VD = -2V, VC = -2V, VE = 2V, VB = 1V, VA= -1V
