S.J. Shelomith | Special Prize 2023 | December 17, 2022

Project Introduction

Pollution of natural resources have become an emerging issue of concern today.

Many parties are actively involving in finding causes and solutions for different
types of pollution. Briefly, there are three main types of pollution;

− Air pollution

− Land pollution

− Water pollution

This project focuses on water pollution, specifically, in the geographical region of

Kandy city. Kandy district, which is quite populace, have a population density of
roughly 1500 people per km2. Kandy city, being a commercial, business and social
centre, attracts regular aggregations of people. Considering the highly bio-
interactive environment surrounding the city it is very much prone to pollution.
The ecosystems in Kandy city where water stores and water ways are concerned
include, the Kandy Lake, the Mahaweli river and the Udawatte Kale reserve.
Pollution via causes such as machinery emissions and effluent disposals have
lasting effects on the biosphere connected to the hydrosphere which will be
researched in detail in this project.

Observations and data collection regarding the project will be done both on the
field as well using other sources. The data thus received will be analyzed under the
following categories;

 Chemical analysis
 Statistical analysis
