Sport and Active Lifestyles

Good morning,
The theme of my topic is “Sport and active lifestyles in Great Britain”, and today I’m going
to talk about the role of sport and about the most popular sports and active lifestyle in Great Britain
.
Speaking about the role of sport, I’d like to cite British writer Terry Pratchett, “The
important thing about football – is that it is not just about football, it is about people who come
to watch it.” So Sports are a great force for unity throughout the world. In large and small cities,
the local sports team pull people together and make them feel like a close community. The same is
true nationally, for network and cable coverage of football, baseball, basketball makes the teams
and players seem like an everyday part of life. And on a global scale, soccer matches and the
Olympic Games briefly unite countries in a peaceful competition in which everyone agrees on the
rules and standards of excellence. To sum up,the role of sport is always great all around the
world.
As for Great Britain, most people there are real sport-lovers. Even if they don't go in for
sport, they like to talk about it. Do you know that many kinds of sport took their origin in Great
Britain? Cricket, football, rugby, tennis, table tennis, badminton, squash, canoeing and snooker
were invented in Britain.
What is the most popular kind of sports in Great Britain? It is football or soccer.
According to the statistics, 53.6 percent of teens in the UK play football every week. There is
no national football team in Great Britain. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have
their separate football clubs, which compete in the European and World Cup matches. English
football fans are fond of most exciting games which are held between teams from the same city.
For example, between Manchester United and Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea from London.
In short, footbal not only unites people, it also brings a lot of fun.
Are people in Great Britain active? Unfortunately, People in the UK are around 20% less
active now than in the 1960s. If current trends continue, they will be 35% less active by 2030. As the
result, Public Health England (PHE) wants to see more people being physically active and emphasizes
that all adults should aim to be active daily and should include muscle strengthening activity, such as
exercising with weights, yoga or carrying heavy shopping, on at least 2 days a week. So, Great Btitain
needs really a healthy nation.
In conclusion I’d like to say that sport is an essential part of people’s life in Great Britain.
Both professional and amateur sports are very popular there. Moreover, people in this country
should be more physically active.
