CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

The internet nowadays is becoming the biggest part of our daily lives. We can

collect information and at the same time it services as our entertainment and

communication. Social media is one of the internet-based form of communication.

Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create,

share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities.

Today the internet has taken a firm place in people's lives. It is difficult to

imagine a young man who at least once a day did not check for news lines. The modern

reality requires us to stay in touch and updates us on the latest viral happenings,

especially trends. It is used to build relationships among people. With their help, we can

express ourselves and share our ideas to the world. During the line spent on social

media, youngsters go into different connections and get the chance to speak with a

relatively boundless number of individuals and community gathering, with a wide range

of identities, take in a considerable measure of stories, can trade suppositions and talk

about issues representative of the younger generation. The truth is that social media is

beneficial to society, but also has downsides.

Since it's a relatively new technology, there's little research to establish the long-

term consequences, good or bad, of social media use. However, multiple studies have

found a strong link between heavy social media and an increased risk for depression,

anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts. According to research by

EDUCAUSE, a non-profit organization, the typical student spends about half that

amount of time—between 1 and 2 hours—on social media (37% of respondents) and

streaming video (36% of respondents). About a third of students (32%) spend less than

1 hour per day on other online activities.

According to a report by the non-profit child advocacy group Common Sense

Media, one in five teens said social media makes them feel more confident, compared

with 4% who said it makes them feel less so. In the survey of more than 1,000 13 – 17-

year-olds, 28% said social networking made them feel more outgoing versus 5% who

said it made them feel less so; and 29% said it made them feel less shy versus the 3%

who said it made them feel more introverted. When it comes to relationships with

friends, more than half (52%) of teens said social media helped to improve relationships

versus just 4% who said it had a negative impact.

The researchers wish to conduct a study on what effects social media has in the

social attitude of a student. As previously stated above, social media is everywhere.

There are many people who are into social media, especially the youth, kids, students,

and young adults. For this reason, this research is carried out with the aim of measuring

the students’ attitudes towards using social media from the lenses of several attributes,

including gender, age, year of study, social media application, experience, and interest.

The population of this study is the Grade Twelve HUMSS students enrolled at ASIAN

COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY.

The benefits that you may get from this study is the awareness of how social

media may be influencing how we interact to other people. Aside from the known

negative effects of social media namely: addiction, poor sleep, eye fatigue, negative

body image, depression, anxiety, cyberbullying, and more. The research is conducted in

making people aware that using too much social media is harmful especially for kids

and teens because social media is distracting them, disrupting their sleep, and exposing

them to bullying, rumor spreading, unrealistic views of other people's lives and peer

pressure.

Related literature

Before going into the main variables of the study, the researchers discuss in

the first part what is the effect of social media on the social attitudes of the Grade

Twelve HUMSS students. In the second part, the researchers talk about the connection

of independent variables in this study such as the social media which involves

interactions in modern ways, sharing information, motivations, depressions, treats,

anxiety. These all variables were investigated to determine or to see if there are effects

of social media to the attitudes of the grade twelve students. In the last part of the

chapter, the researchers try to evaluate studies related to the topic of the study.

Interactions on social media, particularly because the majority of the students have

social media, and they use it to interact with others for variety of reasons.

On concept 1. Siddig, B. (2020) according to his statement, due to developments

in communication technology, people may now easily overcome time and space

limitations. As a result, people's capacity to communicate instantly with millions of other

people has risen and enhanced. These innovations could have a significant positive

impact on activities like education.Activities like distance learning, blended learning, and

even interactive education might be made significantly simpler and more effective. For

instance, in terms of education, the teaching of languages may benefit significantly from

the usage of social media. Instructors could assist students in developing higher

proficiency in language acquisition and usage through social media sites like Facebook,

WhatsApp, and YouTube. The social media platforms would enable learners to immerse

themselves in scenarios where they openly communicate with people who are more

proficient than them in the use of the language. From this research article, it is evident

that social media can be applied to aid in the teaching of languages. Learners can

interact freely with native speakers of the language they seek to learn, and they could

also direct the process of learning themselves. These would be enabled through the

application of social media in the instruction process. Further, learners could also

immerse themselves in the culture associated with the language they seek to learn.

Consequently, the learners would increase their grasp and end up improving the

learning experience. Finally, social media may allow free interaction with native

speakers of a language. In this manner, the learners would be improving their diction

and pronunciation of the words and phrases; a fact that would greatly enhance the

learning process.

On concept 2. According to Sponcil, M. and Gitimu, P. (2013)  This study looked

at how college students utilize social media and how that impacts their interactions with

others and their perceptions of themselves. Students participated in this study by

answering questions on their own use of social media, their ability to communicate with

friends and family, and how it affected their self-concept. The findings showed that

every college student in the sample had used at least one social networking website.

The use of social media and communication with family and friends had a.586 Pearson

association. The Pearson connection between using social media and one's self-

concept was.658. Future research on the factors contributing to the growth of these

social networking sites may be impacted by these findings.

On concept 3. According to Sawyer, R. and Chen, GM. (2012) They say that In

today's globalizing culture, social media has become an increasingly prominent part of

our daily lives. Regardless of the distance separating them, it offers an environment

where people from all over the world may interact, communicate, and share knowledge.

In order to be more suitable to handle the demands of a new cultural environment,

intercultural adaptation entails the process of fostering understanding through

interaction. According to research, people frequently utilize social media to stay

connected to their home nations while adjusting and to better assimilate into the host

society.   The purpose of this paper is to examine how social media usage affects the

process of intercultural adaption. An American university conducts in-depth interviews

with its international students. Future directions for research in this area are also

highlighted in light of the analyses' findings.

On concept 4. According to Yango A., P. Bermudo, and E. Quendangan (2019)

The purpose of this descriptive-correlational study was to determine how college

students' attitudes toward the internet as a communication medium influence their level

of English language utilisation in the classroom at the University of Perpetual Help

System Laguna-Philippines during the second semester of the academic year 2017-

2018. The fifty (50) college students who took Technical Writing and Philippine

Literature courses during the aforementioned term were the respondents.

The respondents were chosen using a simple random sampling technique by the

researcher. The findings revealed that there was no significant relationship between

students' attitudes toward the Internet as a communication medium and their level of

English language utilisation in the classroom, based on a p value of 0.211, which was

greater than the significance level of 0.05. This comprehensive study concludes that,

while there are many benefits, students have varying perceptions and attitudes toward

this modern process of learning that uses the internet as a communication medium.

Similarly, teachers play a significant role in enticing students' attention to maximise the

use of English language in the classroom, which can be obtained by creating interest

among them through the use of media platforms, particularly the Internet, which is

nowadays undeniably inseparable from English language teaching and learning.

On concept 5. Gagalang, J. L. (2022) According to him, the widespread use of

social media has provided learners with numerous reading opportunities. However,

educators are increasingly concerned that excessive social media use jeopardises

students' reading competence and, eventually, academic performance. The current

study sought to determine the extent to which social media use influences university

students' (N=101) reading attitudes and competence, which serve as the foundation of

academic performance. The study employed a mixed-methods approach. The collected

data were analysed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software

version 26.  The interview responses were analysed qualitatively. According to the

findings, social media platforms (SMPs) were the least used for educational purposes.

Students demonstrated positive reading attitudes, emphasising their importance of

reading and their joy in learning new things. However, because they read posts on a

daily basis, they had a lower proclivity for productive reading attitudes such as making

time to read during downtime, being enthusiastic about advanced reading, and reading

with friends. Overall, reading ability indicated incompetence. This research looks at the

role of social media in shaping learners' reading attitudes and influencing their level of

reading competence.

Related Studies

This study is conducted to determine the involvement of social media towards

the social attitude of Grade Twelve HUMSS students. There have been many studies

that examined the social attitude of senior high school students on social media. Many

of the studies were conducted using Senior high school and undergraduate college

students.

One study was conducted by Kaya, T. and H. Bicen (2016) stated in their paper

studies. This study aims to examine the effects of social media on student's behaviours

which will mainly focus on Facebook. It will also be determined whether there is a

positive relationship between confidence, social media participation, and social media-

related behaviours when using Facebook. A general scanning model was used to

observe high school students' attitudes in order to collect primary data. 362 high school

students from grades 9 to 12 were chosen as participants. According to the findings,

Facebook is used for communication, entertainment, and the sharing of news, pictures,

and songs. Furthermore, their Facebook profile picture is alone, and students were

aware that swearing is a form of misconduct, which is a positive sign.  According to the

study, students were aware of the importance of protecting their social identity because

their Facebook shares are not public. They also respect privacy by not using their

friends' Facebook accounts.

Other researchers would include Mahadi, SR., Jamaludin, NN., Johari, R.,

and Fuad, INFM. (2016) at University Technology MARA, Seri Iskandar Campus, 32610

Perak, Malaysia entitled "The Impact of Social Media among Undergraduate Students:

Attitude" stated on this paper aims to study the impact of social media on the attitude of

art students from the Art and Design Faculty at University Technology Mara, Perak

campus. The research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods. A sample of

120 students was drawn at random from five departments (Fine Art, Graphic Design,

Fashion, Ceramics, and Photography) to respond to the questionnaire, and five

students were interviewed. The finding was analyzed based on the data extracted from

the questionnaire and oral interview responses. The results reveal that most students

are actively involved in social media and they realized the impact of social media in their

daily life as well as their attitude.

of social media by Generation Y, according to this statement, raises more questions

than it does answers. It: focuses primarily on the United States and/or (at most) one

other country, ignoring other regions with large and rapidly growing Generation Y

populations where social media use and its determinants may differ significantly; studies

students whose behaviours may change across life cycle stages; relies on selfreports

by different age groups to infer Generation Y's social media use; and does not

investigate the drivers and outcomes of social media use.

      R. Kulidtod (2017) conducted research on the effects of social networking media on

academic performance of students at the University of Southern Mindanao in the

Philippines. The study of social networking media has been the primary means of

communication between people all over the world, hence the term "cyber-world." This

includes, among other things, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Instagram, Flicker,

Frienster, Blogs, Podcasts, Youtube, Tumblr, and Skype. Cell phones, tablets, laptops,

desktop computers, and e-readers were among the technological devices used by users

of these forms of media. Researchers all over the world have varied findings on the

effects of these forms of media on the academic performance of students.
