Impact Caused by Lack of Social and Physical Outdoor Activities Among Teens During the Pandemic

Life is changing because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the way we used to live is becoming a
memory. This pandemic is having an impact on people's lives especially among teenagers .To combat the
rising number of cases of covid-19, the government enacted a movement control order (MCO).This order
has limit the movement of citizen from going out for unnecessary to reduce the rapid spread on this virus
.As a result, teenagers are missing out on social and physical outdoor activities.Teenagers has been feeling
a sense of loss since the movement control order (MCO) came into effect in March. The impact caused by
the lack of social and physical outdoor activities among teens during this pandemic includes lack of social
skills, depression and health problems.

First and foremost, due to the pandemic, the most affected are teenagers who will face some problems
like lack of human interaction which will cause lack of social skill .The lack of social skills can happen
when some of them tend to avoid crowdedness which means they feel more comfortable to be in their own
space or maybe they do not have enough courage to face people in the surroundings. To be honest, we can
see these events through our current country's condition. Since the pandemic occurs, lots of sectors need
to be taken down such as the academic sector where all schools in Malaysia need to be closed in order to
avoid the spreading of the virus. Hence, most teenagers need to face online class learning sessions through
this pandemic. Thus, these actions can affect their inability to acquire new skills, then it also can affect
their academic reputation. Besides, as we know nowadays social skills are one of the most required
criteria in order to survive with today's lifestyle so without an excellent social skill how come teenagers
nowadays can go through the changes of life in the future. Therefore, due to the pandemic, the lack of
facing others or surroundings tend to decrease the inabilities of each teenager to develop new social skills.

Next, depression. Given the current global situation, which includes countries being pushed into
periods of lockdown and isolation to help break the chain of transmission, it has a huge influence on many
people's mental health, especially teenagers .These situations can contribute to serious conditions of
mental health. Based on KFF analysis of data from the Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey During
the pandemic, a larger than average share of young adults (ages 18-24) report symptoms of anxiety or
depressive disorder (56%). The symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, feeling hopeless and
easily irritated. This pandemic has caused loneliness in a socially isolated teen who is separated from
friends and family members at this time. It is worse when it comes to children who live alone with parents
who are busy working until they do not even care about their child's studies. This can be a major factor
which causes teenagers to fall into deep depression because they will feel that they have no one to spend
time with as their parents are so busy. Therefore, it is very clear that the pandemic is causing serious
mental health problems among teenagers.
Finally, the last impact that occurs among teenagers due to this pandemic is health problems. One of
the causes of health problems is from mental health issues .Medically Reviewed by Dan Brennan, MD on
March 29, 2021 state that mental health issues such as depression has been linked to many chronic
illnesses like diabetes, asthma, and arthritis. Some people who are suffering from mental illness do not
even have the energy to keep their hygiene. Without good hygiene, their body can accumulate bacteria that
contribute to infections and diseases such as athlete's foot, body lice, and scabies. Other than that, for some
teenagers, who live in a small house will face difficulty doing exercise due to limited spaces. This will lead
to no enthusiasm for them to keep their body fit. Lowest quality health due to no exercises being done can
cause a high risk to suffer chronic illness in the long term. Besides, it will cause the accumulation of fat
and lead to obesity and other diseases. In the other point of view, lack of social skills will lead to social
anxiety. They will experience more stress and loneliness which will take a toll on their health. Therefore,
lack of social and physical activities will lead to health problems among teenagers.

To conclude this issue briefly, that deficit social and physical outdoor activities will lead to many
consequences on the teenagers like lack of social skills, declining of health quality but the most
concerning is the severe mental illness such as depression. Not only the high authorities should take the
urgency to overcome this dilemma among the teens but the individual itself must find a way to clap back
on these issues. They can enhance their social skills by practicing speaking in the mirror. For the physicals
they should spend some more time outside rather than locked in a room. Other than having a good health
level by doing some exercises, this also can help to give a peace of mind by nature. Everyone should play
a role in giving support to their loved one moreover during this pandemic.
