Chemicals and apparatus

Based on the video and lab manual:
i. List all the chemicals used.
ii. What is the name of the separatory flask used in the experiment?

Results and Discussion

In an experiment, the observed melting point of unknown is 84-90 ℃. The recovery weight of
unknown is 0.18g and benzoic acid is 0.09g.

i. What is acid-base extraction used for?

i. Using reaction schemes explain how the compounds possibly separated and why HCl is
added to aqueous layer.
ii. Explain why organic layer is washed with sodium chloride and dried with sodium sulfate.
iii. Calculate percent recovery for unknown and benzoic acid.
iv. Explain possibilities for low percent recovery of unknown and benzoic acid.
v. What is the literature melting point for the unknown used in the video?
vi. Identify the unknown and give at least 3 reasons why the melting point is not exactly the
same as in the literature and having larger range.

Conclusion:
Write conclusion base on the experiment and results given
