1.0 INTRODUCTION

The impact of computers and the internet on our lives today is likely much greater than

we realise. Obtaining information and quickly converting it into a product that

consumers want is critical to remaining in business, and all of this is done nowadays

via computers and applications or information systems. And information systems will

continue to transform businesses and our way of life. Many business leaders use

technology to manage every aspect of their organisation, from product development to

customer service. It has brought evolution in almost every field, changing the ways of

teaching and administering activities such as e-learning, e-library, and online portals

where teachers and students communicate, and information sharing has never been

better.

The study sought to provide a more convenient way to conduct course

registration at a tertiary institution, which has a very broad coverage and the

unwavering support of many individuals who benefit from it, and has also become an

instrument for students and institutions to save time, as well as organisations that

benefit greatly from its services. Given that time is of the essence, it is a highly

prioritised role in the efficiency of every system to improve the convenience of online

registration in its conduct in order to maintain a wide range of beneficiaries to follow

through the dynamic technologies that are taking shape and business of today. In

educational institutions, the effect is felt more acutely due to crowding and the hassles

that are commonly referred to as the last-minute rush, but keep in mind that it is a human

norm to pay bills on time.

2
1.1 PROBLEM STATEMENT

There are several online registration systems that have been developed in

various contexts and to meet specific needs. The project was divided into three

sections: online registration, which is the system's initial project, data access,

and web security.

The need to use time wisely for those students who travel just to register

at the institution and who encounter unbearable queues just to collect a form

that must be moved around to be signed, and who occasionally find the

responsible personnel not in the office at the time of need. This adds to the

frustration, especially when one has a lot of work to do other than register at the

institution. The need to complete all of this work from the comfort of one's own

home or workplace, maximising the time spent on personal matters during

vacation. There is a significant loss of time during the lectures on the first days

when those who registered late were unable to attend the lectures in order to

complete the registration process. Given that information technology is seen as

a major supporter of environmentally friendly development, this system would

have complied with the Green IT initiative by eliminating manual paper work.

3
1.2 SCOPE

The study's goal is to create and implement a web-based student information

management system for the University, replacing the old manually done paper

work and minimising the security issues and problems it has. The proposed

system is a multi-user system built with the Java programming language and

MySQL DBMS (Database Management System) support. The system is limited

to and designed for students. They have the ability to check their information

after being given a unique username and password for a secure login.

1.3 OBJECTIVE

The overall goal of system design is to provide an efficient, modular design that

reduces system complexity, facilitates change, and results in easy

implementation. This will be accomplished by designing a system with high

cohesion and low coupling. Furthermore, this system will provide consistent

user-friendly interface design models as well as a straightforward transition

through the various system functions.

The objective of this project are:

• To manage student’s information .

• To make registration easier for both students and administrators

• To reduce unnecessary paperwork in maintaining student’s

information.

• Generation of the reports and results of the students.

• Information about different student

• Information about subject offered in various semesters

4
1.4 MODULES OF THE PROJECT

Service statements The system should specify how it should respond to specific

inputs and how it should behave in specific situations.

• Administrator module

The system administrator is responsible for keeping the system running

and thus should have more access than any other user. Passwords should

be reset and new users should be added to the system by the

administrator. The following system functions should be available to

accomplish this:

o Administrator should be able to view from the back end.

o Should be able to add new users and active/deactivate user

profiles.

o Update user profiles

o Administrator should have access to all system components.

• Student module

o Login – Each student would need a unique login username and

password.

o Change password – Students should be able to change their

passwords

o The student should be able to input their course for the semester.

o Logout – The student be able to logout his/her profile

5
• Faculty personnel module / Chairperson

The chairperson's main responsibility is to approve registration at the

departmental level and should be able to see who is registered in his or

her department.

The chairperson will need the following system functions to accomplish

the above:

o Login – the chairperson should also have a unique login

username and password.

o Approve and disapprove the pending registrations in his/her

profile.

o View the list those registered students.

1.6 Justification

Today's market is flooded with numerous student information options from

which schools and colleges can choose. The growth of the IT industry has been

phenomenal in recent years, as more people have discovered the benefits of

using this platform. As a result, we will make this system operational and

provide Software and Services in the future.

The Course Registration System was developed with the goal of creating

a tool for all colleges to integrate into their existing systems and create a much

more user-friendly interface for the most important steppingstone before the

start of each semester. Students can view and register for courses using this tool

in just two steps: Course Search and Course Registration. The Course

Registration System is extremely useful, as it is simple to use, responsive, and

quite efficient.
