1
Pump Bearing Loads
• The hydraulic loads are dependent on the:
• type
t and
d size
i off iimpeller
ll and
d casing,
i
• the pump operating conditions such as
fluid suction pressure, and
• the point of pump operation.
• Bearing loads should be evaluated at the
BEP condition and the maximum and
minimum pump rated conditions

Bearing Lubrication
Oil bath lubrication
In horizontally oriented
applications, the oil-bath
level is set at the centre of
the bearing's lowest
rollingg element when the
pump is idle.

Bearing Lubrication
Oil bath lubrication
The housing should have a bypass opening beneath
the bearings to allow the oil to flow freely. The cross
section area of the opening:

Bearing Lubrication
Oil-ring lubrication • The oil-ring is made of
brass or steel and sits
on the shaft.
• The inner diameter of
the oil-ring is
generally 1.6 to 2.0
times the diameter of
the shaft and can be
grooved for best oiling
efficiency.
15

Bearing Lubrication
Oil-mist lubrication • Oil-mist provides fine
droplets of clean
clean, fresh
and cool lubricant to
the bearings.
• The oil-mist may be
introduced into the
bearing housing
(indirect mist) or
directed at the bearing
by a reclassifier fitting

Oil-mist lubrication
• In both cases, the housing must be
provided with a small vent [3 mm dia.
(0.125 in.)] opposite the point where the
mist enters the housing or bearing.
• Directed oil-mist is recommended if the
bearing (n
(n.d
dm) value is greater than 300
300,000
000
and if the bearing supports high axial load.
Where dm=(d+D)/2, d in mm and n in r/min.

Examples include enclosed gear drives
operating at low speeds and open gearing.
2. Grades 0, 1 and 2 are used in highly loaded
gearing.
3 Grades 1 through 4 are often used in rolling
