WARNING SYSTEM RESEARCH


DIRECTIONS: As a student you should conduct a little research for warning systems on your
respective barangays. Describe briefly the details of the warning systems they had and analyze
how it would help the community for public preparedness.

MY COMMUNITY WARNING SYSTEM


In order for the system to function properly, there are four essential components.
Disaster risk knowledge based on systematic data collection and disaster risk assessments;
detection, monitoring, analysis, and forecasting of hazards and potential outcomes;
dissemination and communication, by an official source, of authoritative, timely, accurate, and
actionable warnings and associated information on likelihood and impact; and preparedness at
all levels to respond to the warnings. Individual early warning systems are designed to give
communities and individuals the tools they need to respond to dangers in a timely and
appropriate manner, minimizing the risk of property damage, human injury, loss of life, and loss
of livelihoods.

The system's core components are the warning services. Hazard prediction and
forecasting must have a solid scientific foundation as well as a dependable, round-the-clock
warning mechanism. To produce accurate warnings quickly, continuous monitoring of hazard
factors and precursors is necessary. Wherever possible, warning services for various dangers
should be coordinated to take advantage of existing institutional, procedural, and
communication networks.

Those who are at risk must receive alerts. For the right responses that can help protect
lives and livelihoods, clear messages with basic, helpful information are essential. There must
be created acceptable authority voices and pre-identified regional, national, and community
level communication platforms. To ensure that as many people as possible are alerted, to
prevent the failure of any one channel, and to reinforce the warning message, numerous
communication channels must be used.

DIRECTIONS: Analyze the picture below and answer the questions that follow

1. What can you say about the picture? Describe it briefly


The picture shows a squatter area that encompasses low-quality housing,
occupied by the poor, usually on the periphery of cities. It can also be seen in the
polluted water and lack of trees in the surrounding.

2. What situation have you noticed to be disastrous?


The polluted water and the lack of plants in the surrounding area may cause
floods when there is heavy rain. The unsanitary practices of the neighbors may also
raise the possibility of them getting sick due to the dirty environment that can manifest
viruses and bacteria.

3. What hydrometeorological hazard was presented in the picture?


Flash flood is one of the hydrometeorological hazards that were present in the
picture. The picture depicts the inundation of land areas that are not normally covered
by water. They are identified by continuous storms/ rain, distant thunders, rapidly rising
water, muddy water, and water that carries logs and other debris.
4. Based on what you noticed and analyzed, what can you do to avoid this situation?
To avoid flash floods, people can clean the surroundings to avoid the water
sticking up and prevent contamination. Planting trees or other plants can also benefit in
terms of sucking up water and providing a support system to the soil when heavy rain
comes.
