Worksheet- Motion in a straight line

1. A rocket is fired upwards from earth's surface such that it creates an acceleration of 20 m/sec2. If after
5 sec its engine is switched off, the maximum height of the rocket from earth's surface will be?
(Ans: 750m)

2. The displacement of a particle along x-axis is given by x = 4 + 6t + 5t2. Obtain its velocity and
acceleration at t = 2s. (Ans: 26m/s, 10m/s)

3. The position of an object moving along x axis is given by 𝑥 = 𝑎 + 𝑏𝑡 2 , where 𝑎 = 8.5𝑚, 𝑏 = 2.5𝑚/𝑠 2
and t is in seconds. What is its velocity at t = 0s and t = 2s? What is the average velocity between t = 2s
and t = 4s? (Ans: v = 10m/s; average v = 15m/s)

4. A body covers 12m in 2nd second and 20m in 4th second. How much distance will it cover in 4s after the
5th second (Ans:136m)

5. A body covers 4m in the 3rd second and 1 2m in the 5th second. If the motion is uniformly accelerated,
how far will it travel in the next 3s? (Ans: 60m)

6. Two balls are thrown simultaneously. Ball A vertically upwards at 20m/s from the ground and ball B
vertically downwards from a height of 40m with the same speed and along the same line of motion. At
what point do the two balls collide? (Ans: 15.1m from ground)

7. A balloon is ascending at the rate of 4.9m/s. A pocket is dropped from the balloon when situated at a
height of 245m. How long does it take the packet to reach the ground? What is its final velocity?
(Ans: 7.6s, v=69.6m/s)

8. A car covers the first one third of a distance 𝑥 at 10km/h, the second one third at 20km/h and the last
one third at 60km/h. Determine the average speed of the car over the entire distance 𝑥.
(Ans: 18km/h)

9. The speed – time graph of a particle moving along a fixed direction is shown below. Obtain the (i)
distance traversed by the particle between t = 0 to 10s (ii) average speed between this time interval.
(Ans: 60m; 6m/s)

10. In a car race, car A takes time t less than car B and passes the finishing point with a velocity v more
than the velocity with which car B passes the point. Assuming that the cars start from rest and travel
with constant accelerations a1 and a2, show that v = 𝑡√𝑎1 𝑎2 .

11. The displacement ‘x’ of a particle at the instant when its velocity is ‘v’ is given by v =√3x + 16. Find its
acceleration and initial velocity. (Ans: 1.5units, 4units)
