A paragraph

A paragraph is a unit of writing in which single topic is illustrated with clear


explanations and examples. It expresses the topic ideas with a certain amount of
sentences, usually a paragraph with five sentences needs to be developed with more
information and a paragraph with 15 sentences needs to be divided. It is described as
building blocks for the essay. The paragraph has a coherent style where sentences are
related to each other to show organized structures .Within essays, research papers,
books: the paragraphs are indented to clarify the beginning of new paragraphs. It forms
a unity of connected ideas and related sentences.

The structure of paragraph

The paragraph comprises of three main parts: a topic sentence, supporting sentences
and a concluding sentence. The topic sentence is usually the first sentence in the
paragraph and it provides the main and general idea of the paragraph. The supporting
sentences form the body of the paragraph, they contain detailed information with clear
examples, they usually contain from three to six sentences. Furthermore, they may
varied according to the paragraph's objectives; examples, facts and statistics can be used
in the supporting sentences. The concluding sentence is the last sentence in the
paragraph, it restate the ideas that have been mentioned in the paragraph.

Types of paragraph

Paragraph comes in different types in order to utilize for different purposes, these
types have a different structures. In addition, they can be integrated in many piece of
writing. The writer may choose specific type according to the aims of the assignment.

These types are descriptive paragraph, narrative paragraph and expository paragraph.
The descriptive paragraph provides detailed information about the topic with reference
to the characteristic of picture, person and place. It is used to inform the reader with
completed description of the topic, the writer usually uses wide range of adjectives in
descriptive paragraph. For example, my cat was small; it has shiny yellow eyes with
some black spots inside her eye lenses. The narrative paragraph usually tells a story
from personal experience or historical events. The reader should be provided with new
insights from the narrative paragraph. In addition, the paragraph contains vocabulary to
enhance the reader attention. For example, I will always remember my first day at
school, I was crying all that day. The expository paragraph aims to inform the reader
by providing detailed information from facts; it does not aim to persuade the reader,
therefor it is also known as informative paragraph. It gives clear explanation about the
ideas of the topic. For example, Teachers always think that the textbooks provide them
with clear instructions about the teaching methodology.

Types of paragraph in essay

Within essay, the paragraphs differ from each other in order to show their purposes.
The introductory paragraph contains the thesis statement and it supports the thesis with
strong opening. It also uses vocabulary to interest the reader attention about the essay
topic. The body paragraph is a paragraph that aims to develop the topic ideas with
evidence as well as explanation about the ideas in the introductory paragraph by
providing detailed information and examples. The transitional paragraph help the writer
to transfer from a general topic to sub-topic of the essay, it also helps the writer to avoid
the confusion that may come to the readers, when new paragraph is presented about
related ideas or specific points. Finally the concluding paragraph aims to draw a clear
conclusion from the points that has been illustrated in the essay by restating the main
points and summarizing the outcomes from the discussed evidence.
