Title: The key aspect of procurement in project management: Investigating the effects of
selection criteria, supplier integration and dynamic acquisition.

TOPIC: The topic is well structure to focus on specific aspects of project management;
investigating the effects of selection criteria, supplier integration and dynamics of acquisition.
For that reason, the topic gives the readers the information required in making decisions of
procurement in project management.

Abstract: the study was aimed at identifying the key aspects of procurement in the project
management context and their relation to project success, particularly the effects of selection
criteria, supplier integration and the dynamics of acquisition. The author’s intention of the study
was to analyses in depth a large sample of articles that deal with procurement in the project
management context. The authors pointed out that the research presents implications for practice
by exploring how procurement affects project success.

Authors: the authors had clear knowledge of the research subject and their findings can used in
making decisions in project management.

Introduction: The authors in their introduction started by pointing out the importance of supply
chain collaboration. They pointed out that well-managed partnerships between buyers and
suppliers are useful for achieving collaboration fluency and improving procurement
effectiveness. They opined that companies have a vital role to play in the overall performance of
a project and therefore selection and evaluation of the most suitable supplier are relevant
procurement processes for a project’s success, which contributes to the effective management of
supply chain. Therefore, company-supplier integration requires appropriate safeguards and
coordination mechanisms to succeed. The higher the level of integration, the greater the role of
suppliers in project decision-making, and different levels of integration will have distinct impacts
on the project’s success.

Literature Review: in the literature review, the authors pointed out that procurement process is
an area of interest to organizations responsible for project delivery for better performance in
quality off product, cost, cycle time and responsiveness. They stated that procurement process is
composed of different stages (pre-acquisition phase, tender process and contract award, contract

and supplier management), each one requiring a specific and careful design capable of
guaranteeing the best possible results, and that supplier performance should be monitored and
controlled regularly so that any failures can be identified and corrected. Evaluation of the
supplier’s performance throughout the project’s implementation is important to ensure the
success of the project. The authors also pointed out that the selection of a supplier is one of the
main activities of the procurement area.

Another relevant area pointed out in the literature review is the company-supplier side, and the
form of its relationship. They also pointed that to obtain collaborative advantages; the integration
of a supplier into the company is complex and involves appropriate guarantees to be successful,
which implies that different levels of responsibility and integration need to agree between the
company and the supplier. The degree of supplier integration can range from none to three
different levels. These levels can described as being three boxes-white, grey and black. In the
white level, the supplier consulted informally on the project, with discussions on specifications
and requirements, but the purchasing company makes all the decisions.

Methodology: The authors, aligned with the objective of the study, they carried out a systematic
literature review that aimed at comprehensively identifying and synthesizing of specific topic,
which differed from traditional narrative reviews, because they are structured, organized,
transparent and replicable procedures at each stage of the process-minimized bias by completing
exhaustive literature analysis, meta-analysis and content analysis.

Conclusion: The conclusion has made clear and precisely with authors highlighting that, the
study contributed to the literature by analyzing in depth a large sample articles that deal with
procurement in the context of project management. Based on the analysis, the authors noted that
it was possible to answer two key research questions proposed, and it shows that the academic
literature focuses on the dynamics of acquisitions and lacks studies on the spectrum of supplier
integration and supplier selection criteria. Moreover, the research is concentrated on the
construction industry and infrastructure projects, lacking researches related to other types of
projects. Second, the relationship between the dynamics of acquisitions and success dimensions
is cover by the literature; however, the relationship between the spectrum of supplier integration
and supplier selection criteria with success dimensions is poorly explored.

The authors in their research presented implications for practice by exploring how procurement
management affects project success. They cited that several of the study has managerial
implication, and that more synergy with suppliers can lead to a positive impact on the team.
Besides, focusing more on the learning process with the supplier can positively affect the future
impact on the company and positively impact on the customer. The authors also highlighted the
main gaps and trends in the literature. Among them, lack of studies with focus on the relationship
between the spectrum of supplier integration, supplier selection criteria and success dimension.

Capital procurement is the process of acquiring and managing capital goods and services
necessary to complete a capital project. Capital goods are manufactured goods used to produce
other products for consumption. Capital goods include factories, machinery, tools and
equipment. Capital projects, depending on the industry, are typically large investments (network
of sourcing executives).

Procurement process is not a lone function, but for an organization to achieve its competitive
advantage there is need to have company-supplier integration, appropriate to safeguard and
coordinate mechanisms to succeed. The higher the level of integration, the greater the role of
suppliers in project decision-making, and different levels of integration will have distinct impacts
on the project’s success.
