Character Symbolism

Crisostomo  In the novel he symbolizes a man that has a liberal mind,
Ibarra which means he is open minded. As well as
Straightforward and hopeful Patient and genuine man He
turns out to be exceptionally vicious and incautious when
he incited.

Maria Clara  She symbolizes a huge part from the novel Noli me
Tangere for the fact she portray purity and innocence of
Filipino women religious

Capitan Tiago  Capitan Tiago was a typical figure during the time of
Rizal. He represents the rich Filipinos who abuse their
kindred Filipinos in return for the impact and the wealth
that they may pick up from their ground-breaking
affiliations.

Padre Damaso  He represent a priest that is talkative and cruel, he


committed crimes that is very unforgivable for the fact the
he raped Doña Pia, Maria Clara's mother. He continually
antagonizes Ibarra and prevents his marriage to Maria Clara
He symbolizes the Spanish friars of Rizal's time.

Sisa She is thought to have spoken to the country who was


enduring as her character has endured with the loss of
her kids. The tragic events that ruined her life represented
the abuse that the motherland received from her
colonizers.

Pilosopo Tasio  He symbolizes the learned Filipinos. He is a pessimist. He


spent most of his money on books and now lives in poverty
Rizal can relate to his character as his oldest brother,
Paciano Rizal. 

Dona Victorina  She is one of the lesser evils in the novel. She represents
the individuals who have a contorted perspective on their
character. Everything that is indigenous is inferior and
everything foreign as superior.

He symbolizes the one who was brushed by a shot prior


Basilio to getting back, support by his mom. Mentioning to her
what had occurred, Basilio later nodded off, longing for his
