EXPERIMENT NO: DATE:

CHEMICAL KINETICS

Aim
To study the effect of concentration variation on the rate of reaction between sodium
thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid.
THEORY
Sodium thiosulphate reacts with hydrochloric acid and produces a colloidal
solution of sulphur, which makes the solution translucent. The reaction occurs
as follows:

The property of the colloidal solution of sulphur to make the system translucent is used to study
the rate of precipitation of sulphur. The rate of precipitation of sulphur increases with an increase
in the concentration of the reacting species or with an increase in the temperature of the system.
With an increase in the concentration, the number of molecular collisions per unit time
between the reacting species increase and consequently chances of product formation increase.
This results in an increase in the rate of precipitation of sulphur.

Procedure :
1.Take a four 100 mL beakers and make a mark ‘X’ in the centre of the outer surface of the
bottom with the help of a glass marker pencil. Fill 50 mL of 0.1M sodium thiosulphate
solution in first beaker.
2 Fill 40 mL of 0.1M sodium thiosulphate solution and 10 ml water in second beaker.
3. Fill 30 mL of 0.1M sodium thiosulphate solution and 20 ml water in third beaker.
4. Fill 20 mL of 0.1M sodium thiosulphate solution and 30 ml water in fourth beaker.
5.Add 10 ml HCl in first beaker and start the stop watch and record the time required for the
disappearance of the mark ‘X’.
6.Repeat the experiment in other three beakers
7.Plot the graph between concentration of sodium thiosulphate and time

Precautions
1. Start the stopwatch when half of the hydrochloric acid solution has been
transferred to the reaction flask and stop the watch when the mark ‘X’ becomes
invisible.
2. Select suitable scale for plotting the graph.
