AIM: To study the effect of concentration on the rate of reaction between

sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid.

MATERIAL REQUIRED: Measuring cylinders, Conical flasks,
OBSERVATIONS AND CALCULATIONS Stop-watch, 0.1M sodium thiosulphate (Na2S2O3) solution
1M HCl, Distilled water etc

PROCEDURE:
Flas Volume Volu Total Conc. of Volum Time (t) 1. Take five clean conical flasks and label them as A, B, C, D and E
k of me volum Na2S2O3 e of taken 1/t respectively.
No. Na2S2O of e of solution 1M for (s-1)
3 wate soluti (M) HCl cross to 2. Add 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 ml of 0.1M sodium thiosulphate solution
solution r on (ml) become to the flasks A, B, C, D and E respectively.
(ml) (ml) (ml) just 3. Then add 20, 15, 10 and 5 ml of distilled water to the flask A, B, C
invisible
(s) and D respectively so that the volume of solution in each flask is
A 5 20 25 0.02 10
25 ml.
4. Add 5 ml of 1M HCl to the conical flask A.
B 10 15 25 0.04 10
5. When half of the HCl solution has been added to the conical flask,
C 15 10 25 0.06 10 start the stop- watch immediately.
D 20 5 25 0.08 10 6. Shake the contents of the conical flask and place it on a white tile
E 25 0 25 0.1 10 that has a cross mark at the center.
7. Go on observing from the top of the flask and stop the stop-watch
when the cross mark just becomes invisible. Note down the time.
8. Repeat the experiment by adding 5 ml of 1M HCl to flasks B, C, D
Plot a graph between 1/t (in s-1) and the conc. of and E respectively and record the time taken in each case for the
Na2S2O3 by taking 1/t along ordinate axis and conc. of cross to become just invisible.
Na2S2O3 along abscissa.
RESULT:
1. The graph obtained is a straight line.
2. 1/t is directly proportional to the concentration of Na2S2O3.
3. Rate of the reaction between Na2S2O3 and HCl is directly
proportional to the concentration of Na2S2O3, which is one of the
reactants.

PRECAUTIONS:
1. Measure the volumes of sodium thiosulphate solution, HCl and
distilled water very accurately.
2. Use the same tile with the cross-mark for all observations.
3. Complete the experiment at one time only so that there is not much
temperature variation.
4. When half of the HCl has been added to sodium thiosulphate
solution, start the stop-watch immediately.
5. View the cross-mark through the reaction mixture from top to
bottom and from the same height for all the observations.
