Activity 1b: Bible reading (5 minutes)

- Acts 2:43-47

Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the
apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their
possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all as any had need. Day by day, as they
spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad
and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day
the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Activity 1c: Sharing

Share an experience by posting three or six sentences on our discussion board related to the
Acts 2:43-47. You will receive 5 points for this. (10 minutes)

Activity 1d: Exposition - Common Good

● In keeping with the social nature of man, the good each individual is necessarily
related to the common good, which in turn can be defined only in reference to the
human person: Do not live entirely isolated, having retreated into yourselves, as if you
were already justified, but gather instead to seek the common good together.
(CCC1905).

● By common good is to be understood “the sum total of social conditions which allow
people, either as groups or individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more
easily.” The common good concerns the life of all. It calls prudence from each, and
even more from those who exercise the office of authority. It consists of three
elements: (CCC 1906).

● First, the common good presupposes respect for the person as such. In the name of
the common good, public authorities are bound to respect the fundamental and
inalienable rights of the human person. Society should permit each of its members to
fulfill his vocation. In particular, the common good resides in the conditions for the
exercise of the natural freedom indispensable for the development of the human
vocation, such as “the right to act according to a sound norms of conscience and to
safeguard...privacy, and rightful freedom also in the matters of religion.(CCC 1907).

CENTER FOR RELIGIOUS STUDIES

● Second, the common good requires the social well-being and development of the
group itself. Development is the epitome of all social duties. Certainly, it is the proper
function of authority to arbitrate, in the name of the common good, between various
particular interests, but it should make accessible to each what is needed to lead a
truly human life: food, clothing, health, work, education and culture, suitable
information, the right to establish a family, and so on. (CCC 1908).

● Finally, the common good requires peace, that is the stability and security of a just
order. It presupposes that authority should ensure by morally acceptable means the
security of society and its members. It is the basis of the right to legitimate personal
and collective defense. (CCC 1909)

Opening Prayer

Too late have I loved You, O Beauty so ancient and so new,

too late have I loved You! You were within me
and I was outside, and there I searched for You.
Deformed as I was I ran after those beauties which You have
made. You were with me but I was not with You.
I was kept far from You by those beauties which, unless
existing in You, would have never existed.

You have called, You have cried out, and You have pierced my
deafness , You have lightened, You have shone forth,
and You have dispelled my blindness. You have sent forth
Your fragrance and I have drawn my breath and panted after
You. I have tasted You, and hunger and thirst. You have touched
me, and I am inflamed with the desire of Your peace.

Live believing Valley, mountain
Dreams are for weaving There is a fountain
Wonders are waiting to start Washes our tears all away
Live your story Words are swaying
Faith, hope and glory Someone is praying
Hold to the truth in your heart Please let us come home to stay

Overview of the topic on Solidarity

Solidarity is about the expression of Christian love united as one in

order to achieve full human development.

Activity 2c: Biblical reading (5 minutes)

Matthew 10:40-42

‘Whoever welcomes you welcomed me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who
sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of the prophet will receive a prophet’s
reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of the righteous person will
receive the reward of the righteous, and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of
these little ones in the name of a disciple-truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.

Activity 2d: Sharing

Share an experience that expresses oneness of goal in the context of love especially in the
current time of the COVID 19 pandemic. (10-15 minutes)

Instructions:
1. Think about a situation that shows unity in a certain critical situation like the
COVID 19 pandemic. Write a post expressing your opinion.
2. Share your opinion in 3-6 sentences on our discussion board (You will receive
5 points on this).

Activity 2e: Exposition on Solidarity

● The new relationships of interdependence between individuals and peoples, which are
de facto forms of solidarity, have to be transformed into relationships tending towards
genuine ethical-social solidarity. This is a moral requirement inherent within all
human relationships. Solidarity is seen therefore under two complementary aspects:
that of a social principle (1939-1941) and that of a moral virtue.(CCC 1942).

● Solidarity must be seen above all in its value as a moral virtue that determines the
order of institutions. On the basis of the “structures of sin” (St. John Paul II; 1988) that
dominate relationships between individuals and peoples must be overcome. They must
be purified and transformed into structures of solidarity through creation of
appropriate modification of laws, market regulations, and judicial systems.

CENTER FOR RELIGIOUS STUDIES

● Solidarity is also an authentic moral virtue, not a “feeling of vague compassion or

shallow distress at the misfortunes of so many people, both near and far. On the
contrary, it is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common
good. That is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really
responsible for all. (St. John Paul II; 1988).

● Solidarity and the common growth of mankind (The Church’s social doctrine regarding
solidarity clearly shows that there exists an intimate bond between solidarity and the
common good, between solidarity and the universal destination of goods, between
solidarity and equality among people, between solidarity and peace in the world.) (St.
John Paul II; 1988).

● It expresses the need to recognize the ties that unite men and social groups among
themselves, the space given to human freedom for common growth in which all share
and in which they participate. (Pontifitical Council for Justice & Peace; 2004).

● The apex of solidarity is indicated here in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, the New Man,
who is one with humanity even to the point of “death on the cross” (Phil 2:8).

● In the light of faith, solidarity seeks to go beyond itself, to take on the specifically
Christian dimensions of gratuity, forgiveness and reconciliation.

I call upon you, O God, my mercy who made me

Now, as I call upon you, do not abandon me, for

you came to my aid even before I called upon you,
in all sorts of ways, over and over again, when I was
far from you, you coaxed me to listen to your voice,
to turn my back on you no more, and to call upon
you for help when, all the time, you were calling

You blotted out all my evil deeds,

that shows delegation of responsibilities and write a post in relation to it.
2. Share your opinion in 3-6 sentences on our discussion board (You will receive

Overview: 3a Subsidiarity

Subsidiarity is where responsibilities are given to the people in order for them to find
ways in attaining human development and sets limits for state intervention. It is a way of
harmonizing the relationships between individuals and societies.

Activity 3b: Bible reading-(5 minutes)

Matthew 15: 32-39

Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion for the crowd, because
they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send
them away hungry, for they might faint on the way, ‘Where are we to get enough bread in the
desert to feed so great a crowd?’.

Jesus said to them, ‘How many loaves have you?’ They said, ‘Seven, and a few small
fish.’ Then ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, he took the seven loaves and fish;
and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave
them to the crowds.

And all of them ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven
baskets full. Those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children. After
sending the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadha.

Activity 3d: Exposition

● Socialization also presents danger. Excessive intervention by the state can threaten
personal freedom and initiative. The teachings of the Church has elaborated the
principle of Subsidiarity, according to which “community of a higher order should not
interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its
functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to coordinate its
activity with the activities of the rest of society, always in view of the common good.
(CCC 1883).

● God has not willed to reserve to himself all exercise of power. He entrusts to every
creature the functions it is capable of performing, according to the capabilities of its
own nature. This mode of governance ought to be followed in social life. The way God
acts in governing the world, which bears witness to such great regard for human
freedom, should inspire the wisdom of those who govern human communities. They
should behave as ministers of divine providence. (CCC 1884).

● The principle of Subsidiarity is opposed to all forms of collectivism. It sets limits for
state intervention. It aims at harmonizing the relationships between individuals and
societies. It tends toward the establishment of true international order. (CCC 1885).

Task: Watch the video clip “Child Labor in the Philippines” by DW, a German public broadcast
service.
Use the URL to access the clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLUNRf_rXwM

Gold is a highly-prized commodity worldwide. The Philippines are rich in gold deposits, but
mining that gold is a dangerous job that is often carried out by children. The wages are pitiful.

The gold trade is a huge global business. The Philippines have particularly rich deposits of gold but
working conditions and the mines are poor and child labour is common brother as Erick and Jay are
dependent on their work in the mines to eke out a living “mining a rock is the toughest part”. We'll Eric
and Jay managed to mine enough gold this week to put food on their family's table this is the Philippines
Gold Coast the town of Paracale is home to numerous small gold mines. Jay and Eric work in one of
them Jay is 16 and his brother Eric is only 14 “sometimes I get worried that something's going to
collapse in the tunnel it's dangerous”. The boys’ workplace is 50meters below ground Eric has a head
torch but no special protective clothing. Every day he goes underground he dropped out of school two
years ago. This is the ventilation system that provides air in the tunnel. The search for gold takes him
deeper and deeper into the mountainside often dynamite is used for blasting. Breathing is difficult
down here but that doesn't stop the smokers who work here. “It's really hard the toughest part of this
job is mining the rock sometimes it takes hours. I'm doing this for my family so my brothers and sisters
will have a roof over their head and enough to eat but it's so hard”. How many hours do you work here?
“24hrs, this work is hard but we don't have any choice we grew up with it it's the only thing we've
known since we were kids”. Several times a day Eric takes the rock that he has hammered away up to
the surface.
His father Paolo communicates with him from the top of the mineshaft. Paulo has also been a minor
since he was a child. “The rocks ready to go okay boys get going” the rope is manually operated during
power outages. Eric has mine 20 kilograms of gold or this morning. The rock is crushed in this machine
the resulting sand is mixed with water and mercury and forms a gold mercury amalgam. The next
stage is the deadliest the amalgam is heated up a number of times to separate the gold from the
mercury. The fumes are extremely toxic for the workers and their environment Eric and Jay breathe
in these fumes day in and day out the end product a piece of pure gold not much bigger than a grain of
rice. Eric can't sleep long he has to go back to work in the mine at night the next day his brother Jay

goldsmith doesn't earn much from the transaction either the gold is worth 800pesos about 15 euros.
“That money has to last a week” back home Jay gives his mother the money. “That's not much just
enough for us. It's not enough but it's better than nothing maybe you'll have more like next time” there
are eight mouths to feed in the family the youngest is just a week old “there's no alternative sometimes
the boys do other odd jobs on the side but they never last boy kids are banned from working in other
trades so they don't have any choice but to work in the mines” the earnings were so meager that Jay
and his father head back to the mine on what is meant to be their day off the mines here on the
mountains ide belonged to various small operators according to local custom.
The ground can hear and if a mine is productive the owner is obliged to give a sack of gold ore to the
needy it's meant to bring luck. “Thanks for the gift” Jay and his father immediately checked the contents
J says these rocks aren't any good they're full of quartz at least they contain some gold but the quality
is poor the whole sack is maybe worth a hundred pesos that's enough to buy rice. “There was a bad
accident a while back a worker was hauling sacks in the rain and he slipped and fell into the mines
haft they found his body in the tunnels. The gold miners put their lives on the line but the environment
also suffers all of the chemicals flow straight into the sea. Jay and his father returned home empty-
handed they made the long walk for nothing. “I wish my children could finish their schooling that way
they'd have the chance to do some other kind of work and earn a regular income and they wouldn't
have to suffer like I do. I dream of finding a steady job to support my family, but I'd like most of all is
for my brother to be able to go back to school. I do the work of two people to make that possible.”

Overview
Poverty is universal recognized social problem since ancient times. It affects a great
number of people contrasting sharply with the wealth and luxury of very few families, the elite
in society. On the political side: Power and control are also elitist that tend to perpetuate
themselves in political dynasties.

Since they are the voiceless segments in society, the Church in the Philippines gives
its stand of preferential option for the poor.(PCP II 122).

from one another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep
at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand,
“Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me
something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me
clothing. I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Then the
righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or
thirsty and gave you something to drink?. And when was it that we saw you a stranger and
welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in
prison and visited you?. And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to
one of the least of these members of my family, you did it to me.” Then he will say to those at
his left hand, “You are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil
and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was hungry and you gave me
nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me
clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer, “Lord when
was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did
not take care of you? Then he will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to
one of the least of these, you did not do it to me” And these will go away into eternal
punishment, but the righteous into eternal life’.

Activity 4c: Share an experience on how you were able to help a poor person.

In 3-6 sentences, post your experience in our discussion board. (5 points)

Activity 4d: Exposition

Alms giving to the poor is a witness to fraternal charity: it is also a work of justice
pleasing to God. (CCC 2462)

The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church (5) states that love faces a vast
field of work and the Church is eager to make her contribution with her social doctrine, which
concerns the whole person and is addressed to all people. So many are waiting for help.

Poverty comes in many ways, it can be inadequacy of material resources, education,

food, medical as well as social assistance, Poverty is a complex problem which can directly
be connected to the political realm. Government assistance cannot reach the real poor and
the marginalized which can be a commission of both in the lower up to the highest government
position because of corruption. Due to lack of education as a results to poverty, they become
voiceless and therefore disregarded, despised and exploited.

PCP II (312) states that it is the demand of Christ that we should love and give
preference to the poor. The common good dictates that more attention must be given to the
less fortunate members of society. We as church should help what is considered to be the
little ones, the poor and marginalized in our society. This is essential option of Christian faith,
an obligatory choice. Eternal salvation depends on the living out of love of preference for the
poor because the poor and needy bear the privileged presence of Christ.

PCP II (313) continues to illustrate that solidarity “must be present whenever is is

called for by the social degrading of the subjects of work, by exploitation of the workers, and
by the growing areas of poverty and even hunger. It is the mission of the Church that she can
be the ‘Church of the poor’.

PCP II (314) clearly reminds us that in the Old Testament God sends prophets to
denounce all sorts of injustices against the poor. They viewed God as the liberator of the
oppressed and defender of the poor (Amos 5:12). In the New Testament, the Beatitudes indicate
how Jesus considered the poor and the lowly clearly inscribed in the gospel. (Luke 6:20).

Love and preferential option for the poor has a truly evangelical basis it impels us to be
more concerned on issues concerning street children, the unemployed, poor fishermen,
farmers and workers, exploited women, slum dwellers, sidewalk vendors and beggars, tribal
Filipinos and others at the margin of human and social life.

Activity 4e: Sharing

From the exposition, post your experience in how you were able to help a poor person
and in 3-6 sentences, post our experience in the discussion board and you will receive 5 points
for this,

Activity 4f: Final Exposition

The existence of the poor has been there since ancient times. We also can see that God
loves the poor as he always sends prophets in defense of them. Jesus also reiterated this in
his sermon on the mount, the “Beatitude” (Luke 6:20) and Jesus directly identified himself with
the poor (born in a manger, lives in poverty and does not have any place to stay).

Try to picture this in your imagination in order to have a clearer view in relation to the
topic of preferential option for the poor.
