Objective:
Finite Element Analysis
In this practical, deformation of a 3D beam model under applied pressure and fixed support is
visualized using Abaqus CAE software. Model tree and result tree was used in this procedure and
analysis.

Steps Followed:
To get our required results we had to go through 3 phases:
1. Pre- Processing
2. Solution
3. Post Processing
Below we will be discussing each phase in details with step-by-step detailed explanation.

Pre-Processing:
Modelling: Starting from modelling, we first created a part with following features; 3D,
planar deformable, solid and extruded base. Approximate size of 300 was set. Then we
sketched our part using rectangle, and then dimensioned our sketch with width 200 and
height 20. And then exited the sketch mode. Upon exiting, depth of our model was defined
as 25 in base extrusion and the beam is now ready as shown below.
Here we saved our file.
Defining Material:
Once done with sketching, now its time to define material properties for our beam model.
We defined our material as elastic (One of the mechanical properties). Here values for
young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio were entered 209.0E3 MPa and 0.3 respectively.
Furthermore, we had to define our model as beam in “Create section”. Here we defined its
category as “Solid” and type as “Homogeneous”. Then we applied this section to our model
using “sectional-assignments” by selecting our model geometry.

Defining assembly:
In this step instances were created under assembly option.

Solution:
In this phase, we applied load and constraints on our model.
2 steps will be needed, one will be initial step and second will be general, static analysis
step.
We first created our first step and selected static general as procedure type and named this
step as “BeamLoad”.
Now we have to apply boundary conditions on our model i.e., loads and constraints. For
constraints we selected “BCs” from the tree and applied following properties; mechanical &
symmetry/antisymmetry/encastre, and applied to the left face of our beam.
Once done, we now move towards applying load. Selecting “manager” from “Load” and
mechanical pressure property was selected here. We selected the top of the beam to apply
load there. Then we finally entered a magnitude of 0.5.
Meshing:
Once we got our element, we had to do meshing on it.
For this we first defined our element mesh control, in which hex was defined as lement
shape and structured was defined as technique.
Then element type was defined where standard, linear and 3D stress was selected from
element library, geometric order and family respectively. Incompatible mode was chosen in
element control under Hex tab.
Then we created mesh using seed part and mesh part. In seed part, element size was
defined as 10. And then we finally meshed our model.
Solution:
For this we created a new job from the model tree and then submitted it for analysis. Once
analysis is completed successfully (Check Completed), we continue onwards to our next step
that is post-processing and entered visualization mode.

Post-Processing:
Now we open result section to enter visualization mode and view the results. Then we
plotted deformed shape. Also contours of deformed and deformed + undeformed was
visualized using plot tool from main menu. Result for each step can be seen below in
respective order:
Conclusion:
According to this analysis this model could fail under applied pressure. To avoid failure its
material could be changed to more rigid material. Another way is to vary its dimension.
Though deformation is not so much, but it could fail quite easily.
Conclusion:
According to this analysis, our truss model would fail under applied load. To avoid failure its
material could be changed to more rigid material. Another way is to vary its dimension for
example cross-sectional area or width etc. Though deformation is not so much, but it could
fail quite easily.
