SPECIAL RELEASE
Chicken Inventory in Guimaras shows higher supply
for native/improved than layers

The result of the 2018 April round inventory of chicken in the Province of
Guimaras for both farming and non-farming households revealed higher supply of
native/improved chicken than layers reaching at 440,407 heads translating to a growth
of 9.68 percent over the same period a year ago; the figure is still lower than its level in
2016.

Layer chicken inventory however, reached at 38,163 heads posting a 13.13


percent increment over the same period in 2017 at 33,733 heads.

Moreover, total inventory of chicken as of April 1, 2018 made an upshot of 9.94


percent from the registry of 435,287 heads on the same period of 2017; it improved to
478,570 heads in 2018. The overall increment was driven by the accumulated rise of
both native/improved and layer chicken. See Figure 1.

Across provinces, Negros Occidental contributed the largest chunk at 39.75%


with 8,152,631 heads of the region’s total chicken inventory, followed by Iloilo with
7,333,119 heads (35.76%), Capiz with 2,395,900 heads (11.68%), Aklan with 1,092,549
heads (5.33%), and Antique with 1,056,163 heads (5.15%). Even so, the province of
Guimaras contributed the least at 478,570 heads which accounted 2.33% only of the
region’s total chicken inventory.

Swine Inventory

Swine inventory as of April 1, 2018 dropped by a whopping 16.95% change


compared to the same period last year from 28,623 heads, it went down to 23,772 this
year. Both backyard and commercial farms suffered a huge decline in swine inventory
with 15.13% and 51.36% respectively.

TECHNICAL NOTES
The inventory situation of Livestock and Poultry in Guimaras during the 1 st
quarter 2018 presents the performance situation in terms of inventory of swine and by
type of chicken.

Moreover, data for this special release were collected by the Philippine Statistics
Authority (PSA) through the two (2) major surveys, namely: a) The Backyard Livestock
and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which is conducted quarterly which covers one (1) of the
four (4) replicate samples of the Palay and Corn production Survey (PCPS). It consist of
133 sample households in the province; and b) The Commercial Livestock and Poultry
Survey (CLPS), also conducted quarterly which covers 5 swine farms and 10 layer
farms as of April 1, 2018.

DEFINITIONS OF TERMS:
Inventory – refers to the number of domesticated animals raised in the farms as of a specific
reference date. Also called as livestock and poultry numbers, stock or population.

Livestock – farm animals kept or raised for consumption, work or leisure. For purposes of
census and surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by an operator.

Poultry – a collective term for all domesticated avian for the purpose of food consumption or,
the carcass of such avian/dressed processed for human consumption. Fowl is term used to
refer specific group of avian sharing common anatomical characteristics, e.g. chicken, duck.

Layer – refers to chicken of foreign breed raised for egg production.

Native/improved – a common backyard chicken that is a mixture of different breeds. It is


small, active, sensitive and capable of great flight when frightened.

Commercial farms - refers to any farm which satisfies at least one of the following
conditions:

1. Livestock
* At least 21 head of adults and zero young
* At least 41 head of young animals
* At least 10 head of adults and 22 head of young

2. Poultry
* At least 500 layers
* At least 1000 broilers
* At least 100 layers and 100 broilers if raised in combination
* At least 100 ducks regardless of age
* At least 21 fighting cocks

Backyard livestock farm- refers to any other farm that does not qualify as a commercial
farm.
