Fisheries production in Guimaras continue to rise,


push by municipal fishing

Fisheries production in Guimaras continued to rise for three consecutive years. A 12.3
percent increment was noted in 2015 over its 2014 production and a meager growth of
1.3 percent in 2016 compared to its production a year ago.
The municipal fishing, which influenced 2/3 of the total fishery production, sustained
upward trends. Aquaculture fishing, however, recovered by 0.9 percent in 2016 but still
lower than its 2014 level.

The top seven major species that contributed to the increased municipal fishery
production of the province in 2016 were: Cavalla commonly known as Talakitok which
grew by 20.4 percent chipped in 13.1 percent to the total municipal fishing of Guimaras;
Anchovies (Dilis) improved by 100.0 percent contributed 8.4 percent; and Siganid
(Samaral) production depleted by 3.6 percent in 2016 added 5.0 percent; Spanish
Mackerel (Tanigue) increased by 175.5 percent, shared 3.7 percent; Snapper (Maya-
maya) posted 35.2 percent increment imparted 3.5 percent; Caeso (Dalagang-bukid)
showed 13.4 improvement which accounted 2.2 percent; Fimbriated Sardines commonly
known as Tunsoy, however, decreased by 25.1 percent, contributed 8.4 percent to total
municipal fishing of Guimaras province.

MUNICIPAL FISHERY

AQUACULTURE FISHERY
Aquaculture production was unstable
during the three-year period. From its

Volume of milkfish production was unstable. From a

Cavalla production estimated at 853.4 MT in 2016,

posted 20.4 percent height over its previous year’s
level. A hiked of 79.2 percent in 2015 was realized
as its production gained 708.6 MT. Availability of
forage fish and more catch on gillnets, long line
and hook & line were recorded in the municipalities Cavalla Production, Guimaras:

Fimbriated Sardines (Tunsoy)

Production of Fimbriated Sardines disclosed an
18.9 percent improvement in 2015 over its 2014
level at 616.5 MT. However, a 25.1 percent plunged
was noted in 2016 when its production dropped to -25.1%

Threadfin Bream (Bisugo)

Low production of Threadfin Bream or Bisugo was 8.5%
recorded at 229.6 MT in 2014 which, soared to 260.7
MT in 2015 registering 13.5 percent expansion. The
growth was not sustained, as it dropped by 8.5 percent
in the following year at 238.4 MT. Appearances of the
species was affected by prolonged hot weather Threadfin Bream Production,
experienced in 2016. Smaller sizes of the species also Guimaras: 2014-2016 (in MT)
appeared especially on gill nets and long line fishing
gears.

Snapper production recorded sustained growth from
2014-2016. From a 143.2 MT production in 2014, it
gained18.2 percent in 2015 and further stretched to

Fisheries- refer to all activities relating to the act or business of fishing, culturing, preserving,
processing, marketing, developing, conserving and managing aquatic resources and the fishery
areas including the privilege to fish or take aquatic resources thereof. (RA 8550)

Municipal Fishing- refers to fishing within municipal waters using fishing vessels of three (3)
gross tons or less, or fishing not requiring the use of fishing vessels. (RA 8550)

Aquaculture - refers to fishery operations involving all forms of raising and culturing fish and
other fishery species in fresh, brackish and marine water areas. (RA 8550)
