ORGANIZATION

Most work today is accomplished by organizations. An organization is a

group of people working together in some type of concerted or coordinated effort to
attain objectives. As such, an organization provides a vehicle for accomplishing
objectives that could not be achieved by individuals working separately. The process
of organizing is the grouping of activities necessary to attain common objectives and
the assignment of each grouping to a manager who has the authority necessary to
supervise the people performing the activities. Thus, organizing is basically a
process of division of labor accompanied by appropriate delegation of authority.

One of the primary reasons for organizing is to establish lines of authority.

Establishing lines of authority creates order within the group. The absence of
authority almost always leads to chaotic situations in which everyone is telling
everyone else what to do.

Secondly, organizing improves the efficiency and quality of work through

synergism. Synergism occurs when individual or separate units work together to
produce a whole greater than the sum of the parts. Synergism results when three
men working together produce more than four men working separately. Synergism
can result from division of labor or from increased coordination both of which are
products of good organization.
