Friendship

Monsieur René had a restaurant in Mexico City. One day, he saw a

black dog sitting at the door of his restaurant, staring at him and
wagging its tail. The French man thought this was a nice dog so he
took a juicy steak and left it on the floor for it to eat.

The dog took the steak with its teeth, crossed the street and laid
down on the sidewalk to enjoy its meal. The next day, at the same
time as the day before, the dog came back. Monsieur René was very
happy to see it again and threw a tender steak across the street for
his new friend. Day after day the dog was always punctual outside
the restaurant and the owner always had a steak for it.

One day, a customer was having his meal and screamed after biting
into a piece of bread. He told Monsieur René that the bread was so
old that it broke his front fake tooth. The angry costumer left the
place. Monsieur René was very mad. He took the bread and scolded
the waitress, telling her she could lose her job. Then, he called the
baker on the phone to scold him too. He suddenly turned his head to
the window and saw the black dog waiting outside and drooling. The
furious man walked to the door and threw the rock-hard piece of
bread in the air. The dog saw the bread spinning fast until it hit its
head.

The dog looked at the bread on the floor, looked at the restaurant,
and then, it looked at the French man. The dog was not angry, but
there was sadness in its eyes. A sadness that only someone who has
been hurt after trusting and loving can feel. Suddenly, Monsieur René
realized what he had done, so he turned around and grabbed a steak
from a customer’s plate. He left the restaurant running and tried
really hard to catch up with the heartbroken dog. He gave up after
some blocks, dropped the steak and turned back to the restaurant,
exhausted and ashamed.

He entered the restaurant and apologized to the waitress, who was

not fired. Everyone in the restaurant got back to work and Monsieur
René kept thinking that his friend would come back the next day.
That did not happen for some weeks, although he kept saving a steak
every day.

The dog came back one day. The man took a steak in his hand,
approached the door and stood in front of the dog, but it did not
move. The dog barely looked at the man, who owed it an apology. He
kneeled in front of the dog, dropped the steak and gently petted it.
The dog hardly wagged its tail, sniffed the man’s hand and left. That
was the last time Monsieur René saw the black dog.
