EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The Sugar Act - April 6, 1764

The Sugar Act placed taxes on several commodities such as food, molasses, rum and
lumber.

The Stamp Act - March 22, 1765

The Stamp Act placed another great tax on the colonists. It placed taxes on a wide range of
transactions, such as any form of stamps.
The Americans rebelled against this tax collecting, and many never actually paid it.

Boston Massacre - March 5, 1770

On one late afternoon, a fight broke out between the British and colonists. The British
soldiers then began firing at the crowd, killing three, and mortally injuring two others.
This is often referred to as the first battle of the American Revolution.
EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The Boston Tea Party - December 16, 1773

The British enforced the Tea Act, to help a British Tea Company. This infuriated the
colonists because they did not want a single British company being the center of the tea
trade
The Americans responded one night by boarding three ships and tossing over 92,000
pounds of tea overboard. They avoided harming any crew members or damaging the ships.

The Intolerable Acts - June 2, 1774

The Intolerable Acts were among another acts that angered the colonists.
The Intolerable Acts required colonists to allow British soldiers to enter their homes.
This act eventually led to the 3rd Amendment, once the Americans gained their
independence, to ensure that the U.S. Army could do the same.
