A Peaceful Place That I Have Visited

Maxwell Hill is a peaceful place that I have visited. It is also known locally as Bukit Larut
and located in Taiping, Perak.
It may not be the most popular place among the local and foreign tourists because there
are not many activities that you can do there. However for an introvert like me, it is indeed the
best destination to unwind from the stressful metropolitan life.
One crucial fact that it is a high land with a temperate climate. It is also full of rare
variety of tropical plants. The ferns are huge and the trees are as old as Peninsular Malaysia. In
Fact, many species of wild birds can be spotted there. Fortunately, shooting and trapping them
are unlawful. Another interesting fact is that it is the wettest area in the country.
For visitors who love to go up the peak, they can walk on their feet or get on a four-
wheeled drive vehicle. It is actually a common sight to see some health conscious individuals
hike up the hill around 6.30 a.m in the morning. I envied them then and now, resentful of their
humble pleasure. I could only join them when I was renting a little cottage at 1,100 feet high
from the sea level. In one my walks, I met an old folk collecting some dried leaves fallen from a
tree. He enlightened me that he used it for his bath because they could reduce rheumatism.
Other than hiking up and down the hill, all you can do is to sit down on the benches
provided and breathe the fresh cool air. I missed doing just that. The fresh air is a simple luxury
for a busy city-dweller and it is free. You only need to say, thanks God!
On one of the evenings, I decided to sit at the balcony of the café cherishing the
picturesque sight of Taiping town. I found the most beautiful moment was when the sun began
to set. The tranquilising feeling was indescribable.
Now at the comfort of my home, I can only reinstate my feeling – Maxwell Hill is
definitely a calm and serene place.
