JCI Skills Development Guidelines

JCI SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM MANUAL


In order for JCI to fulfill its Mission and provide opportunities for young people, JCI officers and
members must perform their duties and responsibilities at the highest levels and build Local
Organizations with skilled and motivated members who will join efforts to solve community
challenges and create positive change. To contribute to the achievement of this goal,
experienced members with advanced knowledge of JCI topics and the ability to transfer
knowledge to adult audiences will have the opportunity to help other members learn new skills
and make additional contributions by becoming facilitators at the local, national and
international levels. In addition to JCI values, JCI facilitators will have and respect the following
values: relevancy, excellence, trust and transparency.

1. CATEGORIES OF JCI SKILLS DEVELOPMENT COURSES


The purpose of JCI Skills Development courses will be to develop JCI members to become
leaders and be more capable to run projects that create real sustainable solutions and
community impact. It will also ensure the administration of the organization at local and
national levels are conducted in the most efficient manner in accordance with the JCI
procedures and Constitution.

a. Categories of JCI Skills Development Courses


JCI will offer the following courses for members and each course will have specific
conditions, stated in this manual, to attend and become a facilitator.

i. JCI Free Courses


JCI Free Courses are proposed by JCI, National and Local Organizations and
facilitators. This content is intended to enhance the skills of members as
relevant to the JCI Mission. The list of approved free courses will be
reviewed and approved by the JCI Executive Committee.

JCI Free Courses must fit the following criteria to be approved by JCI:
1. Must be aligned with the practices and principles of JCI
2. The content is the exclusive responsibility of the authors
3. Can be conducted by any JCI member

To propose a Free Course, members will need to provide:

1. A description of the course including name, target audience, minimum and


maximum participant numbers, and a written explanation of why it is a
value to JCI members.
2. Information regarding past sessions- location held, feedback forms, etc.
3. Course Materials
a. Slide Deck
b. Trainers Manual
c. Participant Manual (if needed)
d. Any additional hand-outs or course needs.
4. A statement from the National President confirming that the National
Organization would like to recommend this course
5. A statement from the course owner confirming that he/she/they are fine
with the content being shared and that it's confirmed not including any
copyright content such as photos or text.

ii. Leadership Courses (Effective Communications, Effective Meetings, Effective


Leadership, Project Management, Networking, Social Responsibility; Engage,
Empower, Grow!, Financial Management)

Leadership Courses can be proposed by JCI or National Organizations and


approved by the JCI Executive Committee. This content must be aligned with
the practices and principles of JCI and intended to help JCI members develop
skills and knowledge needed to lead and strengthen their Local Organization.
Leadership Courses must be organized on the JCI website by current National
or Local Presidents and Skills Development Officers.

iii. Advanced Courses (Facilitator & Presenter)


Advanced Courses can be proposed by JCI or National Organizations and
approved by the JCI Executive Committee. This content must be aligned with
the practices and principles of JCI and intended to help JCI members further
advance their skills and knowledge needed to lead and strengthen their Local
Organization.

Advanced Courses must be organized on the JCI website by current National


or Local Presidents and Skills Development Officers.

iv. Foundational Courses (JCI Discover, JCI Explore, JCI Adventure)


Foundational Courses are created and designed by JCI. This content is
intended to teach JCI members and officers the skills that are essential for
the fulfillment of the JCI Vision, Mission and Values.

Foundational courses are considered to be an important first step for


members to understand the structure of JCI and their journey as leaders.
These courses will bear the official JCI name and must be organized on the
JCI website by current National or Local Presidents and Skills Development
Directors.

Criteria to register for Foundational, Leadership and Advanced Courses


Each Foundational, Leadership and Advanced Course will state the criteria to
register and attend the course.
Knowledge tests for Foundational, Leadership and Advanced Courses
In order to graduate from the above courses, participants will be required to
complete a knowledge test and score at least a 70 percent.

2. FACILITATORS
To become a facilitator of Foundational, Leadership and Advanced Courses a JCI member must
fulfill the following criteria:
• Be an active JCI member
• Have graduated from JCI Discover To become facilitator of any Foundational, Leadership
or Advanced Course other than JCI Discover, the facilitator must also be a graduate from
that course.
• Advanced courses must be conducted by at least two facilitators, of which at least one
has conducted the course before.

Facilitators who have graduated from a Foundational, Leadership or Advanced will be eligible to
renew their course certification by retaking the knowledge test on jci.cc if they meet the
following criteria:
• Trainer has graduated from the course they wish to recertify;
• Trainer has trained any JCI course at least 3 times in the past three years.
a. Online Report
Facilitators must complete an online course report within five (5) days after the end of the
course to notify the participants who attended the course so they are able to access to the
knowledge test.

b. Facilitator Star System


In order to ensure quality, improve accountability and transparency an evaluation system based
on Stars has been created. Facilitators shall be assessed and receive stars by each course they
conduct.

According to the evaluations received from the participants and the percentage of graduates,
facilitators will receive grades that will translate into stars. Stars will count individually for each
JCI Foundational, Leadership and Advanced Course and will use the average evaluation of the
two most recent courses conducted.

i. Star Attributions
• Facilitators who score an average of 20 to 25 points from the evaluations
of a course will obtain One Star.
• Facilitators who score an average of 26 to 30 points from the evaluations
of a course will obtain Two Stars.
• Facilitators who score an average of 31 to 39 points from the evaluations
of a course will obtain Three Stars.
• Facilitators who score an average of 40 to 44 points from the evaluations
will obtain Four Stars.
• Facilitators who score an average of 45 to 50 points from the evaluations
will obtain Five Stars.

c. Evaluation Criteria

Participants will answer four questions about the trainer’s performance and each question has
a value from zero (0) to ten (10) points. The final grade will be calculated automatically by the
online system and recorded in the trainer’s database. The facilitator will have access to his
grades and will be able to see which areas they received lower grades so they are able to know
which areas needed improving. The fifth part of the evaluation to reach 50 points or 5 stars will
be calculated by the online system from the percentage of participants who graduate from the
course (passed the knowledge test):

• If 90% or more participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives 10 points
• From 80% to 89% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives 8
points
• From 70% to 79% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives 6
points
• From 60% to 69% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives 4
points
• From 50% to 59% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives 2
points
• From 40% to 49% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives 0
points
• From 30% to 39% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives -2
points
• From 20% to 29% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives -4
points
• From 10% to 19% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives -6
points
• From 1% to 9% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives -8 points
• If less than 1% of participants pass the knowledge test, the facilitator receives -10 points
