Lesson: Diffusion &

Osmosis.
January 17, 2022
10th grade

Audience

● CSEC Biology
● 36 students
Objectives
1. explain the processes of diffusion and osmosis;
2. Importance of diffusion and osmosis in transporting
substances in and out of cells and from one cell to
another in all living organisms. Reference to the cell
membrane as a differentially permeable membrane,
contrast with cell wall which is freely permeable.
3. Carry out simple investigations to illustrate the
movement of particles (molecules and ions). Identify
every-day instances of these processes occurring.
Objectives
discuss the importance of diffusion, osmosis and active
transport in living systems.

Cite examples of each process occurring in living organisms.

For example, diffusion across membrane of Amoeba, gas
exchange across respiratory surfaces, absorption in small
intestine, active uptake of mineral ions by plant roots.

Procedure
Diffusion
1. What is diffusion?
2. Can you give examples from
everyday life?
3. For diffusion to occur, what
conditions must exist?
4. Watch the following and
- State the observation
- explain the observation.

Notes
Read the document and make notes on the conditions affecting
diffusion and examples of diffusion in living organisms.
Homework
1. Carry out an experiment similar to the one in the video
to demonstrate the process of diffusion.
- The potassium permanganate can be substituted with food
colouring or coloured drink mix.
