Some Thoughts on Singing to God

ACCORDING to the Bible, singing is one of the acts of our worship to God. As such, every faithful
Christian should be aware of what the Bible teaches regarding singing. In this brief article, we will dis-
cuss some things the Bible teaches regarding our singing to God.

We must remember that God encourages us to sing to Him. This is what we learn in passages such as
Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16). Singing to God should be something very important in our lives.

We must remember that when we sing to God, we are to do it with the understanding. In 1 Corinthi-
ans 14:15, Paul encouraged the Corinthians brethren to sing to God with their understanding. This
means that we are to pay close attention to the words we sing and the message it contains.

We must remember to sing to God without the use of mechanical instruments, for such are not au-
thorized in the New Testament. The passages of our first point (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16) do not
authorize the use of mechanical instruments, but the use of our mouths and hearts in the process of
singing to God. There is no command, example or implication for the use of instruments in the worship
of the New Testament; therefore, such should not be utilized when we sing to God.

We must remember to sing to God when we are happy. James, the Lord’s brother, encouraged Chris-
tians to sing to God when they are happy (James 5:13). We have every reason in this world to be happy,
since we are a people in Christ, where all the spiritual blessings are (Ephesians 1:3).

We must remember to teach and admonish one another through singing. This is what we learn in Co-
lossians 3:16 where Paul included the following phrase, “teaching and admonishing one another in
psalms, hymns and spiritual songs…” This is one reason why you and I should sing with the under-
standing (cf. 1 Corinthians 14:15).

May the Lord help us to always sing according to what He has said in His Word!

Algunos pensamientos en cuanto al canto a Dios

SEGÚN la Biblia, cantar es uno de los actos de nuestra adoración a Dios. Como tal, todo cristiano fiel
debe ser consciente de lo que la Biblia enseña con respecto al canto. En este breve artículo, discutiremos
algunas cosas que la Biblia enseña acerca de nuestro canto a Dios.

Debemos recordar que Dios nos anima a cantarle. Esto es lo que aprendemos en pasajes como Efesios
5:19 y Colosenses 3:16). Cantar a Dios debe ser algo muy importante en nuestras vidas.

Debemos recordar que cuando cantamos a Dios, debemos hacerlo con el entendimiento. En 1 Corin-
tios 14:15, Pablo alentó a los hermanos de Corintios a cantar a Dios con su entendimiento. Esto significa
que debemos prestar mucha atención a las palabras que cantamos y al mensaje que contiene.

Debemos recordar cantar a Dios sin el uso de instrumentos mecánicos, ya que tales no son autoriza-
dos en el Nuevo Testamento. Los pasajes de nuestro primer punto (Efesios 5:19, Colosenses 3:16) no
autorizan el uso de instrumentos mecánicos, sino el uso de nuestras bocas y corazones en el proceso de
cantar a Dios. No hay orden, ejemplo o implicación para el uso de instrumentos en la adoración del
Nuevo Testamento; Por lo tanto, tales no deben ser utilizados cuando cantamos a Dios.

Debemos recordar cantar a Dios cuando estamos contentos. Santiago, el hermano del Señor, animó a
los cristianos a cantar a Dios cuando estaban contentos (Santiago 5:13). Tenemos todas las razones en
este mundo para ser felices, ya que somos un pueblo en Cristo, donde todas las bendiciones espirituales
están (Efesios 1: 3).

Debemos recordar enseñarnos y amonestarnos unos a otros a través del canto. Esto es lo que aprende-
mos en Colosenses 3:16 donde Pablo incluyó la siguiente frase, "enseñando y amonestándose unos a otros
en salmos, himnos y canciones espirituales ..." Esta es una razón por la cual usted y yo debemos cantar con
el entendimiento (1 Corintios 14:15).

¡Que el Señor nos ayude a cantar siempre de acuerdo con lo que Él ha dicho en Su Palabra!
