6 Bible Reasons Why We Must Pray

A CAREFUL STUDY of the Bible helps us to understand that prayer is not an option in the Christian’s life,
but a command from God. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, we read, “Pray without ceasing.” The verb “pray” comes
from the Greek word proseuchomai, which is found in the imperative mood. This means that God commands
us to pray all the time. With this in mind, let me provide a few reasons why we as Christians must pray.

We must pray because prayer helps us to defeat temptations. In Matthew 26:41 we find the text which tells
us that prayer can help us to overcome temptations in our lives. The more we pray, the better we will be able
to say NO to temptation.

We must pray because Jesus is our example in prayer, and we must be imitators of Him. We are encour-
aged to follow the steps of Jesus (1 Peter 2:21-22). Jesus was a man of prayer (Mark 1:35; Luke 6:12); there-
fore, if we want to be like Him, we must also practice prayer every day.

We must pray because our brethren need our prayers on their behalf. The Apostle Paul encouraged the
saints at Ephesus to pray for one another (Ephesians 6:17). He also exhorted Timothy to pray for everyone (1
Timothy 2:1-3). Paul himself asked the brethren to pray for him (Colossians 4:2-4). The Lord’s brother,
James, also encouraged us to pray for one another (James 5:16). We must pray for our brethren all the time!

We must pray because God wants us to approach His throne of grace. This is what the Hebrew’s writer
said in Hebrews 4:16. God has given faithful Christians the confidence to approach Him in prayer. There-
fore, we must appreciate the great blessing He has given us!

We must pray because Jesus has told us that God will answer our prayers. Jesus told His disciples to pray
to God in His name (John 14:13). If we do so, then God will hear our prayers and will grant the desires of
our hearts (1 John 5:14-15).

We must pray because praying shows God that we want to obey His commandments. As stated early,
prayer is a command from God. If we pray, then God will see that we want to do His will. Prayer not only
shows God that we want to obey Him, but also shows God that we depend upon Him for everything.

6 Razones Bíblicas del por qué orar

UN ESTUDIO CUIDADOSO de la Biblia nos ayuda a comprender que la oración no es una opción en la
vida del cristiano, sino un mandamiento de Dios. En 1 Tesalonicenses 5:17, leemos: "Orad sin cesar". El ver-
bo "orad" proviene de la palabra griega proseuchomai, que en la gramática se encuentra en el modo imperati-
vo. Esto significa que Dios nos manda a orar todo el tiempo. Con esto en mente, permítanme proporcionar
algunas razones por las cuales nosotros como cristianos debemos orar.
Debemos orar porque la oración nos ayuda a vencer las tentaciones. En Mateo 26:41 encontramos el texto
que nos dice que la oración puede ayudarnos a superar las tentaciones en nuestras vidas. Cuanto más ore-
mos, mejor seremos capaces de decir NO a la tentación.
Debemos orar porque Jesús es nuestro ejemplo en la oración, y debemos ser imitadores de Él. Se nos ani-
ma a seguir los pasos de Jesús (1 Pedro 2:21-22). Jesús fue un hombre de oración (Marcos 1:35, Lucas 6:12);
por lo tanto, si queremos ser como Él, también debemos practicar la oración todos los días.
Debemos orar porque nuestros hermanos necesitan de nuestras oraciones. El apóstol Pablo animó a los
santos en Éfeso a orar unos por otros (Efesios 6:17). También exhortó a Timoteo a orar por todos (1 Timoteo
2:1-3). Pablo mismo pidió a los hermanos que oraran por él (Colosenses 4:2-4). El hermano del Señor, Santia-
go, también nos animó a orar unos por otros (Santiago 5:16). ¡Debemos orar por nuestros hermanos todo el
tiempo!
Debemos orar porque Dios quiere que nos acerquemos a Su trono de gracia. Esto es lo que dijo el escritor
inspirado en Hebreos 4:16. Dios ha dado la confianza a cristianos fieles para acercarse a Él en oración. Por lo
tanto, debemos apreciar la gran bendición que Él nos ha dado!
Debemos orar porque Jesús nos ha dicho que Dios responderá nuestras oraciones. Jesús les dijo a sus dis-
cípulos que oraran a Dios en su nombre (Juan 14:13). Si lo hacemos, entonces Dios oirá nuestras oraciones y
concederá los deseos de nuestros corazones (1 Juan 5: 14-15).
Debemos orar porque la oración muestra a Dios que queremos obedecer Sus mandamientos. Como se dijo
antes, la oración es un mandamiento de Dios. Si oramos, entonces Dios verá que queremos hacer Su volun-
tad. La oración no sólo demuestra a Dios que queremos obedecerle, sino que también le demuestra que de-
pendemos de Él para todo.
