Oral Communication in Context Grade 11

Session Topic: Effective Communication Skills (Listening and Speaking)

Objectives:

At the end of the session, the participants will be able to:

 discuss the importance of listening and speaking in their personal and


professional lives;
 differentiate the types of listening;
 identify the barriers to effective listening;
 characterize the qualities of an effective voice;
 observe correct pronunciation through oral exercises; and
 apply effective communication skills in a real life situation through group
dynamics.

Duration : 5 hours

LCD
Laptop
Audio material
Powerpoint presentation

ACTIVITY (15 minutes)


Start the activity by:

 Checking the attendance of the participants.


 Giving the instructions for the day’s activity (Note: Instructions may be
flashed/projected on the LCD):

STOP WASTING TIME:


 Students will be asked to listen to an audio material.
 They will arrange the given tips in proper sequence based on the audio
material.
 Students’ responses will be checked by the teacher.

ANALYSIS (15 minutes)

The teacher will begin the discussion by asking the following questions:

1. What have you experienced while listening to the audio material?


2. What problems have you encountered?
3. How did you overcome these problems?

ABSTRACTION (40 minutes)

Say: To further enhance our understanding on the nature of communication, let


us now focus on the discussion using a powerpoint presentation.

The power point presentation will highlight the following:

1. Definition of listening and speaking


2. Barriers to effective listening
3. Characteristics of an effective voice
4. Oral drills on word stress

APPLICATION (30 minutes)

Say: We shall now prepare for an activity which will make you apply the lessons
you have learned.

Form a group of five to six members.

Create a two-minute group presentation highlighting the importance of effective


listening and speaking in any one of the given context.

 At the clinic/ hospital


 At the guidance office
 At the restaurant
 At the mall
 At the party
 At the gymnasium
 At the internet cafe

Be creative.
