I. ASSIGNMENT 1 (30%)
CLO2 Demonstrate the ability to produce comparison and/or contrast essays
Deadline: Week 7

This assignment requires students to produce a comparison and contrast essay. Students will be involved in
generating and developing ideas for their chosen topic. They will use skills such as organising, writing and
editing in completing the essay.

Task:
To produce a 5-paragraph comparison/contrast essay based on a chosen topic. The topic chosen for this
assignment must be of academic value.

General Guidelines:
 Work in groups of three (depending on the size of the class).
 A chosen topic must be approved by the lecturer. Upon approval, it needs to be narrowed down to a
specific thesis.
 Students must produce and submit an outline before submitting the final essay. (The outline carries
5%)
 The 5-paragraph essay must be between 4-5 pages.
 The final submission must consist of cover page, table of content, outline, first draft and final draft. All
pages must be justified and numbered.
 The font to be used is either Times New Roman or Arial, size 12, and the spacing is 1.5.
 The cover page should include the name of the University, the title of the Essay, students’ names, ID
numbers, section number, and the lecturer’s name.
 Students should adhere to the given specifications.

Students who are caught copying / cheating for this assignment will be FAILED.

 Submission of Outline is in Week 5.


 Submission of Essay is in Week 7.

II. ASSIGNMENT 2 (40%)
CLO 3 Produce reports based on linear and non-linear information

Deadline: Week 6

This assignment requires students to design their own surveys and execute their own mini research. It involves
them in writing a poll or survey, collecting first-hand data, organizing and presenting this data using both
graphic representations and written discourse.

Task:
To produce a report based on linear and non-linear information. The topic chosen for this assignment must be of
academic value.

General Guidelines:
 Work in groups of 4 (depending on the size of the class).
 Brainstorm on possible topics of interest. A chosen topic must be approved by the lecturer. Students
must avoid conducting surveys on similar issues.
 Create survey questions based on samples and criteria given.
 Check and edit questions for clarity and accuracy. Ensure questions do not contain grammatical errors.
Students are encouraged to conduct peer review of questions.
 Collect data by using any suitable methods e.g. interview, Google Form, Survey Monkey, etc.
 Discuss the survey results and present them in the form of a written report.
 The findings should be organized and explained through the use of graphic representations such as pie
charts and bar graphs.
 The final submission must consist of cover page, table of content and report with the questionnaire
appended. Please follow the format/template provided by the lecturer. All pages must be justified and
numbered.

 The cover page should include the name of the University, the title of the survey report, students’
names, ID numbers, section number, and the lecturer’s name.
 Students should adhere to the given specifications.

III. TEST (30%)

Students will be tested on the following areas:

 Fragments
 Run-ons
 Faulty parallelism
 Verb consistency

The format of the test will be error analysis, fill-in-the-blanks and multiple choice questions. The test will be
conducted in Week 6.
