3.COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSESSMENT
3.1 ASSESSMENT PLAN

Writing Grammar Portfolio 25 %

Active Vocabulary Use (2 x 10%) 20 %
Presentation 10 %
Midterm 20%
Final 25%

3.2 DESCRIPTIONS FOR ASSESSED TASKS

Writing Grammar Portfolio 25%

This task is worth 25% of the overall semester grade and involves the following
steps:
1. In class, students listen to a TED talk assigned by the instructor. They
write a “Response Essay” of minimum 400 to maximum 600 words
answering the question in class given under timed conditions.
2. The instructor then indicates the grammatical and syntactical errors in this
writing assignment. Then students write 5 form and function questions
based on the most common errors they have made in the Response
Essay (if students have not made any mistakes, then they will choose 5
form and function questions from the units covered in ENG 118). They will
submit both the questions and the answer key for them.
3. Students write an “Error Correction Log” in which they choose at least 10
of the mistakes they have made while they were writing the Response
Essay. If they have less than 10 errors, they need to choose some
phrases from their Response Essay and provide alternative expressions
for them by paraphrasing. Students are to give their reasons for the
corrections by using the correct metalanguage terms.
4. At this stage, students will be given Tutorials for the work they have
produced so far. After that, students write the Final Draft of the Response
Essay correcting their errors based on feedback. They are expected to
upload the final draft onto Turnitin via Moodle.

Active Vocabulary Use (2 x 10 %)

This portion of assessment is worth 20% (2 x 10%) of the overall semester

grade. In order to help students use vocabulary at the C1 level accurately in
context they are required to write a paragraph using words of their choosing
which correspond to the C1 level of the Common European Framework (CEFR).
There will be two submissions of the Active Vocabulary Use throughout the
semester, each of which will receive a separate grade worth 10% of the overall
course grade.
In this task, students will be expected to write a written response to a given
prompt, in which they must use a number of the words from either their own, and
another student’s AVU. Students must upload this response as a separate
document on to Turnitin via moodle.

ENG 118 Presentation 10%

This presentation task serves as a review of the functions of a specific grammar

form such as relative clause, present perfect tense, noun clause and other forms
studied. The students’ task is to present a grammatical topic from the course that
they had difficulty in or they believe may be difficult for others. They will present
the challenging functions and any other information that they find significant
concerning the topic (i.e. use/exceptions). The structure of the presentation is
required to have the following components:

a. Presentation of the form

b. Explanation of the possible difficulty learners may have in
understanding and/or using the particular structure
c. Demonstrating examples of right and wrong usage of the particular
structure (students can refer to their grammar portfolio or other
examples)
d. Sharing helpful methods/strategies suggested in reference materials.
For this purpose students need to do a little research and collate their
findings in the form of a handout that they prepare. This will serve as
material to further support their peers in their learning process
(examples, checklist, table/graph and other structures can be used).
e. Administering a short quiz on the board, in which they provide their
classmates with questions on the topic they presented
f. Concluding with a brief review

Each component will last around 5 minutes and altogether each student will be
allocated 25 minutes.

ENG 118 Midterm 20 %

There will be a midterm exam to be given during the semester, worth 20% of the
semester final grade. The midterm will specifically include items studied in the
first half of the semester. In the first part of the exam students will be asked to
identify verb tenses and grammatical forms and explain their communicative
function (Form & Function); identify structural errors in a given authentic context,
make corrections based on the rules discussed in class, and explain the error
(Error Analysis). Through a variety of task types (transformation exercises, open
cloze, tense cloze), students’ form and function knowledge will be tested further
in the second part.

ENG 118 Final 25 %

The final exam is worth 25% of the semester grade. The final exam will be on the
whole course content with tasks similar to the midterm.

The ENG 118 exams are performance-based exams designed to measure

students’ ability to analyze form, function and meaning of language structures as
well as their ability to diagnose errors. These exams also assess students’ ability
to produce and transform vocabulary and grammar structures, which have all
been practiced during the semester and tested both in the middle and at the end
of a 14-week course of study.

3.3 SUBMITTING WORK: DEADLINES & REQUIREMENTS

Students are expected to meet deadlines and submit work on time. In the case of
failure to submit an assignment on time, students may not receive higher than a
satisfactory grade. Assignments more than 5 days late will not be accepted
and will automatically receive a zero.

Failure to submit any part of any work at the end of the course will result in the
deduction of the points that had been awarded for that part or the whole
assignment in the case of a lost first draft. It is the student’s responsibility to
keep clear and organized portfolio files of work for submission at the end of the
course.

3.4 FINAL EXAM ELIGIBILITY

In order to be eligible for the ENG 118 final exam, students are expected to:

1. Attend 80% of classes (34 out of 42 classes)

2. Collect 35 points out 75 points available before the final exam

3.6 TUTORIALS
All students are entitled to have one tutorial for each of the Writing Portfolio tasks
they will write in class. After students submit their first draft (written in a lab and
submitted to the instructor at the end of the assigned block) the instructor will
underline all errors on the paper. The task requires students to identify and
indicate the types of errors they have made (using the provided error correction
code) and make an attempt at correcting and explaining them. The tutorial will
serve the purpose of asking about and discussing any errors that students find
difficult to handle. Students shouldn’t expect the instructor to go over all errors
and explain them as this is the main task that students have in the Writing
Portfolio. Tutorials will be made on an appointment basis and any missed
tutorials will not be made up.

4. COURSE RULES & REGULATIONS

4.1 ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance Requirement for ENG 118

According to the attendance requirement for FAE ENG 118, students are
required to attend a minimum of 80% of total course hours (34 out of 42 hours).
Attendance is counted from the first day. Students who exceed the attendance
limit will automatically receive an “FZ”’ grade for the course.

Excused absence
Late registering students, or students adding a course during the add/drop
period, must visit their FAE Unit Head to verify their legitimate late registration
and notify their instructor, indicating the date when they registered. Students will
be credited for the lessons missed prior to the date of registration only. Those
adding or dropping a course will not be credited for attendance on other courses,
and will need to be vigilant as to attendance for the remainder of the semester.

Students switching from one English section to another in the first week must
have a signed note/e-mail from their first instructor to present to their second
instructor in order to be excused for those hours they missed in the second
section.

Students involved in university organized activities, such as sport or cultural

activities, during lesson time, may have their attendance credited if their
instructor gets a notification via the STARS system. As decided by Bilkent
University no student can miss more than 5 days for such activities.

PLEASE BEAR IN MIND THAT THE 20% (ENG 118) ABSENTEEISM LIMIT IS 8
HOURS. IT IS FOR STUDENTS TO USE IN CASE OF UNEXPECTED HEALTH
PROBLEMS OR OTHER EMERGENCIES.

According to Bilkent University regulations (see Articles 4.4 and 4.8) (in Turkish
only):
http://w3.bilkent.edu.tr/www/lisans-ve-on-lisans-egitim-ogretim-yonetmeligi/

- Attendance requirements are not affected by medical reports: Students are

considered "absent" even if they have a medical report.
- Students are not admitted to exams, classes, or other activities on days for
which they have a medical report. If a student has already attended an exam or
evaluation activity while having a medical report on file for that day, they are
considered absent for that exam or activity.

Students can contact the Dean's or Director's office for questions.

Only in serious cases when students’ health problems exceed the 10 % absence
limit should students file a petition with the FAE Directorate within 3 days of their
return to school, attaching an approved health report explaining the seriousness
of their health problem and/or any other formal document supporting their case
as to the emergency of the problem. A program-higher committee will evaluate
individual students’ appeals and give decisions regarding each petitioner’s
attendance case.

Absence for Exams or In-class Assessments

Students are eligible for a make-up of any assessed task or the exams missed
due to legitimate health reasons. As decided by Bilkent University, course
instructors will give a make-up to the students if they receive a formal notification
via the STARS system.

4.2 PUNCTUALITY
Coming to class on time is mandatory, not just for the benefit of the individual
student, but as a basic courtesy to the instructor and the other students. The
door to the classroom will be closed as soon as the class starts. If the students
arrive and find the door closed, then the class has begun and they may not enter
(or knock on the door). In this case, they will be marked absent.

4.3 PLAGIARISM
Bilkent University defines plagiarism as: "The use of somebody else's ideas,
viewpoints, findings or works in a paper, project, report, or any similar document
which is presented as part of a course requirement, without proper
acknowledgment of the source."

For many students avoiding plagiarism is a difficult skill to learn. In the lessons
and tutorials, the instructor will explain how to avoid plagiarism by quoting,
paraphrasing summarizing and citing properly. If students need extra help, they
can make an appointment for an additional tutorial.

It will, however, be the students’ responsibility to avoid plagiarism in their work.

Should the final draft of their assignment still have serious problems with
plagiarism, or if it is copied from another student or written by or with someone
else, they will receive a failing grade, probably an ‘F’. Disciplinary action will also
be taken according to “Bilkent University undergraduate and graduate rules and
regulations” item 4.9. (Turkish only)

5. EXPECTATIONS & PROTOCOLS

5.1 PREPARATION AND PROTOCOL
For every class period, students are expected to bring ALL necessary materials
(textbooks/reading texts/worksheets, writing utensils, a notebook, a plastic folder
for handouts, and a plastic folder for their written work) and to prepare the
required assignments ON TIME.

Since a large portion of the course relies on the collaborative explanation of

various concepts, active participation is essential for the success of the entire
class.

The medium of instruction at Bilkent University is English. Students are expected

to speak in English in class. It is not the responsibility of the instructor to
repeatedly remind students to speak in English.

Finally, students are expected to check our class Moodle page DAILY for
news, announcements, updates, and assignments.

5.2 ACADEMIC COURTESY / CODE OF CONDUCT

While in class, students need to be respectful towards their classmates and their
instructor in order to benefit from an optimal learning environment. One of the
aims of this course is to explore and share ideas, so the rights of others to
express their views must be respected. Sleeping, reading non-course related
materials, eating/drinking, wearing headphones, making or receiving phone calls
or any other activity concerning cell phones, chatting with classmates, and using
inappropriate language will not be tolerated. Cell phones, portable disc players,
etc. are to be switched off and kept out of sight during class.

5.3 E-MAILS
Please note that students are expected to check your Bilkent University e-mail
daily for information or news about the course.

When you send the instructor an e-mail, these rules should be kept in mind;

i. E-mails should be civil. Begin with a salutation (e.g. “Dear Ms. ….”).
ii. The body of the message should be concise, to the point, correctly
punctuated, and written in standard English.
iii. The message should end with your full name.
iv. Include the class section number in the subject heading of every message
(i.e. ENG 118-03).
Messages that do not conform to the above rules will not receive a reply. Please
allow 24 hours for a response during week days, and 48 hours for a response
during weekends.

5.4 OFFICE HOURS

The purpose of office hours is for students to have a set time each week when
they can be sure of finding their course instructors in their office. They do not
need to make an appointment in advance to see their instructor during their office
hour. Office hours may be used for discussing the course, their academic
progress, or for getting extra help. If they would like to receive extra tutorial help,
please contact their instructor in advance.

5.5 TURNITIN
Turnitin is a software program, which instructors and students can use via the
course Moodle page in order to detect or avoid plagiarism. In this course, you are
required to submit the following to Turnitin:

 Final Draft of Response Essay in the Writing Grammar Portfolio

 Active Vocabulary Use submissions
