Question 1 [6 marks]

The shielding effect is approximated by the effective nuclear charge (Z eff). Calculate
effective nuclear charges experienced by valence electron below:

i. neon atom (Ne) (2 marks)

ii. sodium cation (Na+) (2 marks)

iii. fluoride (F-) (2 marks)

QUESTION 2 [8 Marks]

The following questions pertain to the NO molecule:

a) Draw and label the molecular orbital energy diagram for NO

molecule (6 marks)

b) State the electronic configuration of NO (2 marks)

QUESTION 1 [10 MARKS]

a) 0.10 mg of 4-piperidino-N-(2-bromoethyl)-1,8-naphthalimide is dissolved in 5

mL of dichloromethane solvent in order to prepare the sample for UV-vis
analysis. The sample is analysed using a 1 cm width cuvette. Based on Beer-
Lambert law, calculate the molar absorptivity, ε AND determine the electronic
transitions involved for bands A and B. (Formula weight for 4-piperidino-N-(2-
bromoethyl)-1,8-naphthalimide = 387.27.) (8 marks)

QUESTION 3 [10 MARKS]

a) The atomic mass of 12753I is 126.9004 amu. Calculate the nuclear binding
energy of this nucleus AND the corresponding nuclear binding energy per
nucleon. Both nuclear binding energies must be in J units. (Mass of proton =
1.007825 amu, mass of neutron = 1.008665 amu, c= 3.00 x 10 8 ms-1, 1 kg =
6.022 x 1026 amu, 1 J = 1 kgm2s-2) (7 marks)

b) The carbon-14 activity of a tree was found to be 7 disintegrations per minute

(dpm) per gram of carbon. If present day tree has 16 dpm per gram of
carbon, calculate the age of the tree. (t1/2 = 5730 years.) (3 marks)
