Movie: The Queen

The movie Queen revolves around the girl named Rani, she is a shy, introvert and calm girl,
belongs from a typical middle class Hindu family. She studies as well as help her father in his
work at their sweet shop. One day her father’s old friend visits their shop with his wife and son
whose name is Vijay. Vijay had developed a feeling of love at first sight after seeing rani. Then
he tries to approaches her and after numerous tries, he was able to impress her. Their families
were already friends, and after their understanding developed, their family decide to get them
married. Meanwhile before their marriage, her fiancé went abroad to seek better opportunity, and
after his return, he was changed and was reluctant to marry Rani. And a day before their
marriage, he calls Rani at a café and cancels their marriage. Leaving Rani devastated and heart
broken. At first Rani was in denial, believing Vijay will call her and make up, but he does not.
Wedding preparations were in full swing, everyone was around, relatives, friends and neighbor
present, enjoying celebrating.

In typical Asian families, collectivism is very much common, people are there to help and
support in your good and bad, similarly during the wedding time. When her marriage was called
off, her family and relatives, were heart broken and sad, Rani herself was emotionally disturbed
and devastated.

While was asking her fiancé repetitively to marry her, she was crying. Her fiancé mentioned her
not to create drama in front of everyone as more people were sitting in the café and they will
judge them. And his decision is final as now they were not compatible enough and were
different, and she will not adjust after marriage.

After their marriage broke up rani decided to go on her honeymoon all alone and when she
reached there she was introduced to a whole new world where she developed her self-esteem.
And when she returned back from abroad she was a whole new person.

Conformity

Parents showed normative conformity as they didn’t really want to send her all alone to a new
country. But for the sake of their daughters request they allowed her.
Social comparison:

When Vijay compared himself with rani and said that she isn’t compatible and can’t adjust
herself with him, as his status was upgraded.

Impact bias:

She overestimated her feelings that after rejection on the day before marriage she would not be
accepted by anyone and she would die without him.

Psychological immune system:

She found a way to overcome that trauma through going on that trip.

Person scheme:

Her friend, Vijaylaxmi was an opposite of Rani’s personality, she was sassy, assertive, open
minded and liberal. Living in Paris, doing a waitress job to manage finances and has a young
child.

Possible self:

Rani imagination about her future shows her possible self. She had plan, to visit Paris from very
early. She planned to visit Paris and Amsterdam, on her honeymoon.

Role Schema:

She studies as well as help her father in his work at sweat shop. After completing her studies,
she decide to marry and stay as a housewife.

Event Schema

At the start of the movie, all family member and people were enjoying and wedding
preparations were in full swing. They were dancing and singing.

Looking glass-self

She believed that she has low standards because that’s how Vijay expressed how she appeared to
him.
Social identities

Rani belonged to a brown family. That culture would never allow a girl to stay with boys in a
room all alone but when she reached Amsterdam, she had to live with three boys in her room
who eventually becomes her friend.
False Consensus Effect
As she has never been with boys and in her culture it’s always believed and shown the intentions
of a boy towards girls. So, when left alone with the boy Alexander she thinks that he has some
bad intentions towards her then she keeps the door open and pretends to call Vijay to make
herself feel secure.

Self-Efficacy

Coming to Amsterdam, she explores a lot of things and here she finds her very potentials. She
always had high self-efficacy but due to the restrictions Vijay put on her, she never brought up
her capabilities. After coming to Amsterdam, she does the job of her desire and also drives a car
for the first time. When she was approached by a restaurant owner to take part in the cooking
competition she had already developed the audacity to be compatible and effective. In the end
her dish (Goal Gappas) were the only dish that was sold out.
Self- handicapping
Vijay was trying to give false excuses for his past behaviors. With the intention to patch up with
rani.
Self esteem
On the last day in Amsterdam they were asked to paste something on the wall which would be an
evidence of their presence in this room. As rani had developed High self-esteem she had
overcome from her past. Hence she pasted her wedding card on that wall.
Self-presentation
Rani when reached India she presented herself as a whole new/ different person. Changes in
appearance, behavior, attitude etc.
Conclusion:
Our self-esteem is determined by our surroundings if we are encouraging and not restricted at
every point we would have higher self-esteem and would know how an independent life exist.
Our self is made by our dreams and fears.
