widerstreets and buildings made of brick rather (10)…………….. wood. Sir Christopher
Wren, the famous architect, designed many new buildings, including anew St. Paul's
Cathedral – the same one that was associated with the city today. The Great Fire

Drama
1- Lear was so unwise in dividing his kingdom. ( Discuss )

King Lear decided to divide his kingdom among his daughters

according to their love for him. Lear was unwise because he

was deceived by his daughters' bright – painted words, and he

couldn't find out the difference between promises and

actions. He ought to have tested his daughters' love, before

dividing the kingdom among them. Lear also made a big mistake

by giving everything away and keeping nothing for him.

2-In what way was Cordelia different from her sisters?

Though Cordelia loved her father almost as greatly as her

sisters pretended to do, she couldn't be as deceitful as them.

She loved her father more than her sisters did. She thought

that the best thing was to love and be silent. She loved her

father not for what she could obtain from his kingdom and

money, but for her duty. Her words had more truth than those

18
of her sisters.

3-Why did King Lear wish to take no further part in the

government of Britain?

King Lear did not wish to take further part in the government

of Britain because he was over eighty and was worn out of old

age. He also wanted younger ones to manage the kingdom.

4-Old age had made Lear so unwise. (Discuss)

Lear was easily deceived by Goneril and Regan's deceitful

words. He couldn't find out the difference between promises

and actions. He was angry at Cordelia's plainness of speech

that he gave away her share of his kingdom to her sisters and

left Cordelia with nothing.

5-Earl of Kent proved his loyalty and faithfulness in many

situations. [Illustrate]

Earl of Kent was a faithful servant and a good advisor to King

Lear. He loved Lear as a father, honoured him as a king and

followed him as a master. He had always been ready to give his

19
life in war against the king's enemies or when the king's

safety was in danger. Though King Lear ordered him to leave

the country, he decided to stay there to be of any help. He

disguised as a servant and joined the king's service. He saved

the king's life during the storm.

6-What is a jester? What did Lear's jester mean when he

said that a donkey knows when the cart draws the horse?

A jester is a clown or a fool whose job is to amuse kings and

make them laugh after serious business. Lear's jester meant

that matters were reserved. Lear's daughters were leading

him instead of going behind him.

1- One does not feel smaller evils when there's greater

illness. [Discuss]

When Caius found Lear in a terrible condition, wandering in the

dreadful storm, Caius told him that it wasn't a suitable night

for walking around, but Lear reminded him that one does not

feel smaller evils when there is a greater illness. He meant

that the storm in his mind was so much stronger that it took

20
away all other feelings from him. When the mind is balanced,

the body has time to feel ill and he didn't feel the stormy

weather because his mind was greatly disturbed.

7-"O good sir are you here? Creatures that love the night do

not love such nights as these?" [Comment]

These words were said by Caius [The Earl of Kent] to King

Lear during the storm when he found the king wandering in the

dreadful storm in a very bad condition.

8-Why does the story call Goneril and Regan unnatural

daughters?

They were such ungrateful and unfaithful daughters that they

turned their father from a king into a beggar. Instead of

being grateful to their father for what he had done for them,

they punished their father for what he had done for them.

They turned against him and treated him as if he were a

servant. They were so cruel and unkind that they didn't have

any mercy or sympathy for his weakness. They both betrayed

their husbands and fell in love with the same man. Regan killed

21
her own sister out of jealousy and committed suicide.

9-Justice of heaven revenged on Lear's ungrateful daughters.

[Discuss]

How did Goneril and Regan face their end?

Both Goneril and Regan were unfaithful to their husbands.

They both fell in love with the same man, who was Edmund, the

son of Earl of Gloucester. When Regan's husband died, she

announced that she was going to marry Edmund. Goneril got

mad with jealousy and poisoned her sister. Goneril's husband

imprisoned her for killing her sister. In prison, Goneril

committed suicide.

10-What was Cordelia's sad end?

The French army was defeated and Cordelia and Lear were

taken to prison. Cordelia was put to death in prison which

Goneril and Regan had sent out under the command of Edmund.

The Taming of The Shrew

1-Who was Katharine? Why was she called the shrew?

22
Katherine was the oldest daughter of Baptista, a rich

gentleman of Padua. She was called the shrew because of her

uncontrollable temper and sharp tongue. In spite of her

beauty, no one admired her. It seemed even impossible that

any gentleman would ever dare to marry her.

2-Why was Petruchio a suitable person to marry

Katherine?

Petruchio was a suitable person to marry Katherine because of

his high spirits. He was an amusing and most happy – tempered

person. He was so wise and of such a true judgment that he

was able to pretend to be angry when he is really very calm.

3-In what way did Petruchio tell Katherine of his love?

He decided that if she was angry with him, he would tell her

that she sang sweetly as a bird, and if she looked fierce, he

would say that she looked as clear as roses newly washed with

rain. If she didn't speak a word, he would praise the beauty of

her language;

4- When Katherine told her father that she didn't want to

23
marry Petruchio, why didn't he believe her?

Baptista didn't believe his daughter when she told him that

she didn't want to marry Petruchio because the young man

twisted the truth, and asked him not to pay any attention to

Katherine's angry words. He added that they had agreed that

she should seem unwilling in his presence, but when they were

alone, Petruchio had found her very loving.

5- Describe the marriage ceremony.

At first, Petruchio came very late without the rich presents

that he had promised Kate with. He was dressed in a very

strange way and refused to change his clothes. In the church,

he behaved in a very strange way. He shouted and stamped his

feet that the priest, astonished, let his book fall. When the

priest bent to pick the book up, Petruchio kicked him. He also

threw the wine on the face of the man standing next to him

saying that his beard seemed thin and needed to be watered

to grow. His mad behaviour made Katherine frightened and

scared.

6- What were Petruchio's plans to tame his wife?

24
Petruchio tried to tame Katherine in many ways. First, he gave

herneither food nor sleep on the marriage day. He gave her no

breakfast on the following day. He refused to let her have

the cap and dress made for her although she liked them much.

While taking her to her father's home, she argued with him

about what time of the day it was, so he changed his mind and

didn't take herthere.

Comment

1- "Hearing your gentleness praised in every town, I have

come to win you for my wife."

These words were said by Petruchio to Katherine when he was

meeting her for the first time when he asked her for

marriage.

2- "Did he marry me to keep me hungry? Beggars that

come to my father's door are given food, but, I who never

knew what it was to beg for anything kept without food

and withoutsleep."

Kate said these words to herself when Petruchio kept on for

the second day in finding fault in the bed and the food given

to her. He kept her without food and sleep for two days.

These words express her anger about that.

3- "See, love, how much I think of you. I have cooked your

meat myself. I'm sure this kindness deserves thanks."

These words were said by Petruchio to Katherine when he

gave her a very little piece of meat. He wanted her to thank

him because he had cooked it for her.

4- "The poorest service is repaid with thanks, and so shall

mine be before you touch the meat."

These words were said by Petruchio to Katherine when he

brought her the piece of meat. Before she touched it, he had

taken it away because Katherine didn't thank him for it. By

this way, he wanted to lessen Katherine's pride by making her

hungry.

5- "It will be the moon or a star, or whatever I say it is."

These words were said by Petruchio to Katherine when they

were on their way to her father's house in Padua. He said that

it was the moon as it was a part of his plan to test her

obedience. He wanted her to agree to everything he said even

if he said wrong things.

6- "Now, may fortune go with you, son Petruchio you

have won the bet, and I will add another twenty thousand

crowns towhat I gave her before."

These words were said by Baptista to Petruchio after

Petruchio had won the bet. Baptista was filled with joy to see

that amazing change in his daughter. He decided to reward

Petruchio for he had succeeded in taming Katherine and made

her the most obedient wife in Padua.
