1-What is the main idea?
The poet is writing about himself in communication with nature.

Paraphrase: Whenever the poet is a lone in his house, relaxing or


feeling sad and serious, the memory of the daffodils appears in his
mind. He becomes completely happy when he remembers the
beautiful daffodils that he saw one day. He feels that his heart is
dancing happily with the daffodils, as they danced on the day he
saw them. He understands that nature and his own happiness are
connected.

With the wonderful water around you curled,
And the wonderful grass on your breast,
World, you are beautifully dressed
 Who is the author of the poem? Tell in your own words what this
poem is about.
Ans.
The author is William Brigty Rands (W. B. Rands). The poem starts
by the admiration of the poet to Earth and describing it as Great,
Wide, Beautiful and Wonderful. Then near the end he starts making a
comparison between himself and the World\Earth. When he hears an
inner sound that tells him that he is much better than the Earth
because he has things that the World doesn’t have which is the ability
to think and love.

Ans. Tremble: to shake with excitement - Curled: covered with\
wrapped up - Dot: very small point.

In the second part, starting from line 7, however the idea is
changed. The poet compares between himself and the world. At
first, he admits that he is so small compared to the world. But while

Drama "The Winter's Tale"

Act Three

1- Why did Hermione treat Polixenes the way she did which provoke
Leontes jealousy?
She confessed that she was a friend to Polixenes when he visited her
husband and showed kindness that was required as a queen. She
said that if she hadn’t been a friend, that would have been
disobedience to her husband.
2- What happened at the trial of Hermione?
Hermione was accused of treason with Polixenes. The words came
from the oracle came and said that Hermione, Polixenes and Camillo
were innocent. Mammillus, the king’s son died from sadness and fear.
At last Hermione died.
3- "If I had not been a friend to him that would have been disobedience
to my husband." Comment.
Hermione said that at the trial after being accused of treason. She said
that she showed Polixenes kindness that required as a queen and that
she had been a friend to him to obey her husband.
4- "Hermione is chaste; Plixenes blamless; Camillo a true subject;
Leontes a jealous tyrant; and the king shall live without an heir,
if that which is lost is not found." Comment.
An officer said that at the trial to tell Leontes about the oracle’s reply
to his doubts about Hermione, Polixenes and Camillo who were
accused of treason. After Leontes had sent Cleomines and Dion to

the oracle, they came with the reply that proved that they all were
innocent and he was wrong.
5- What happened to Mamillius during the trial of his mother?
He died from sadness and fear for his mother after he had been taken
away from his mother who had been imprisoned unjustly by the king,
his father.

her trial?
That news was deadly to her, then later she fainted.

The mariner said that to Antigonous when he was going to get rid of
the king’s baby as the king ordered. Antigonous named her Perdita.
After that a bear chased Antigonous and killed him.

After he had left the baby in the storm, a bear chased him and then
tore him. He cried to the shepherd’s son to help him saying his
name. At last, he was killed by the bear.

Act Four

1- After sixteen years in Bohemia how did Camillo feel?


Camillo has never left Bohemia, still working in the service of
Polixnes. He missed his home. He wanted to rest his old bones.
2- Who is Florizell? Who was in love with?
He is Polixnes’s only son. He was in love with Perdita the
shepherd’s unreal daughter, in fact, Leontes daughter.
3- "I am afraid that she is the reason my son is so often there." Comment.
Polixenes said that to Camillo when he was asking about his son,
Florizell. Polixenes knew that Florizell spent most of his time at the
shepherd’s house who had a very beautiful daughter. Polixenes was
afraid that there was a relation between his son and the shepherd's
daughter.
4- Why will Polixenes and Camillo go to the shepherd's cottage in disguise?
Polixnes knew that Florizell used to visit the shepherd who had a girl.
He was afraid that there might have been a relationship between his
son and the shepherd’s daughter. He wanted to go in disguise to ask
the shepherd some questions to learn the truth of that matter.
5- "They call him Doricles. He says that he comes from a wealthy
family, he also says that he loves my daughter." Comment.
The shepherd said that to Polixnes who went with Camillo to him to
know the truth of the relationship between Florizell and Perdita.
Florizell used unreal name, “Doricles” in order to hide his real identity.

6- Why didn't Florizell buy Perdita gifts?


Because he knew that she didn’t care about silly things like that. He
said that the gifts she looked for from him were locked up in his heart,
which he had already given to her.
7- "I think a father should be a guest at the marriage of his son."
Comment.
Polixenes said that to Florizell. Florizell decided to get married to
Perdita without telling his father. Polixenes wanted to stop him from
doing that. He asked Florizell if his father had grown so old or had lost
his mind so he couldn’t attend.
8- What happened at the shepherd celebration?
Polixenes, while disguising, tried to convince Florizell that to marry
without his father is wrong, but Florizell didn’t agree to do that.
Polixenes removed his disguise so that Florizell saw that he was his
father. Polixenes threatened Florizell to prevent him from being a king
after him or being a part of the family. Polixenes threatened to kill the
shepherd if Florizell went to him again.
9- What was Camillo's plan to help Florizell and Perdita?
Camillo had a plan to help Florizell and Perdita and himself at the same
time because he wanted to go back home as he missed it a lot. He told
Florizell and Perdita to go to Sicilia and introduce Perdita as his wife to
Leontes. Leontes wanted Polixenes' friendship andCamillo guessed that
he would feel sorry for Florizell and Perdita, who weren't in Polixenesfavour
either. He advised Florizell with Perdita to go to Sicilia and introduce
himself to Leontes. Camillo told Florizell to tell Leontes that he had been
set by the kingn his father and wrote down some things which he should
say to make Leontes trust him. When Florizell talked about the royal
clothes, Camillo told him that he could use his fortune which was still in
Sicilia.

Perdita said that to the shepherd when he asked her if she felt as
Florizell who said that if he had been the most powerful king or the
most handsome youth and he had had more strength and knowledge
than any man, he would not enjoy any of it without her love.

Act Five

1- What did the lords of Sicilia want the king Leontes to do?
As there were no queen or an heir anymore, the lords of Sicilia wanted
the king to marry again and have an heir. They said that it was time for
getting married and stop being in sorrow and pain.
2- "It has made me be without an heir to my kingdom and destroy
the sweetest friend that ever was born." Comment.
Leontes said this to Paulina. They were talking about the king's life and
how he destroyed every good thing in it. He lost his beloved wife, his
young son and his baby daughter. He also lost his childhood friend
3- What did the gentleman say about Perdita and her beauty?
When the gentleman saw Perdita, he was astonished as she was very
pretty. He said that she was the fairest girl he had ever seen and she
was the beautiful piece of earth that the sun ever shined on.
4- What did Paulina say that she had at home?
Paulina said that she had a statue of Hermione made by the famous
master artist, Julio Romano at her home.

5- How did Leontes react when he saw the statue? Why?


When Paulina revealed the statue, it looked so real and alive.
Leontes was shocked that the statue resembled his dead wife as if
she was still alive.
6- "It is so much like her – I would say that the stone statue in front
of me is Hermione." Comment.
Leontes said this to Paulina when she pulled the curtains and showed
them the statue of Hermione. Leontes was shocked that the statue
resembled his dead wife as if she was still alive and that made him full
of happiness to see his beloved wife again.
7-"I think you should leave the statue, but, if you want even more
amazement, I'll make the statue move, step down, and take you
by the hand." Comment.
When Paulina showed them Hermione's statue. Leontes could believe
how real it was and kept staring at it and recalling all the emotion he
had for her. Pauline wanted to surprise them more so she told Leontes
to leave the statue and she would make it move. Paulina wanted to
reveal the secret that Hermione was still alive.
8- What happened when Paulina asked for music to be played while
they looked at the statue?
Hermione stepped down and embraced Leontes. He couldn't believe
himself that his wife was still alive.
9-"How is this possible? How have you done this? For I saw her,
and I thought that she was dead, and I prayed for her each day."
Comment.
Leontes said this to Paulina. When the statue moved and it was
Hermione in flesh and blood. They all were surprised especially

Leontes as he saw Hermione dead. When he saw Hermione alive


again, he felt that he was alive also as he regretted his cruel deeds
every day for sixteen years. He prayed for his beloved ones and for
forgiveness.
10- Jealousy played an important role. Discuss.
Jealousy changed the normal happy life of a king and a queen into a
painful tragedy. Jealousy considered the main reason of suspecting
Hermione and Polixenes which made Leontes act madly hurting and
losing all his faithful ones. It made him lose his best friend ever, his
faithful advisor, his only son, his new born daughter and his great wife
and queen. Jealousy changed Leontes into a blind man who couldn't
see the truth even if it was very clear to him.
