Piaget's theory of cognitive development – Video analysis

Questionnaire
1. What are 2 examples given from the Sensori-Motor Stage?
Sensori-motor stage is the one where humans brain develops through experiences and
movements the five senses. This process starts with simple reflexes; this is a pre-step
of creating habits by doing things intentionally. One of the examples of this step is the
realization of objects permanence when we play hide and seek, another one is when
children start exploring their surrounding starting with short movements until achieve
walking, in that case it is possible to be said that we improve intelligence the same way
we develop our motor skills.

2. What are 2 examples given from the Pre – operational stage?

This stage is categorized for symbolic functions. Fantasy is one of the main
characteristics because children imagine things and they think their toys are alive. The
language development starts and with it we understand that each word has a symbolic
meaning. Play pretending is one of the main games in this stage. Curiosity is another
characteristic, children are always looking for an answer for everything.

3. What are 2 examples from the Concrete operational stage?

In the Concrete operational stage humans achieve logic and the ability to solve concrete
operations One of the examples is inductive reasoning that means for example that if
we see someone eating, we can draw a conclusion and then make a generalization,
Thanks to this we can also develop mathematical awareness.

4. What are 2 examples of the formal operational stage?
This is a stage that stars in adolescence when humans develop the ability to think more
rationally about abstract concepts such us love, success or so on, and hypothesis are
also taken into account. Morality, personality and identity are developed as well as
empathy. Deductive reasoning is developed; we can plan events that are not necessary
linked with reality.

5. How can you create better materials for your students based on this information?
Justify your answer. Mention 1 example
By understanding each stage purposed in Piaget’s cognitive development process, we
can identify the adequate material for each student. For example, for babies we can
stablish that the best material is the one that includes their senses; in the case of
kindergarten students we can motivate them to imagine through the use of puppets and
fairy tales. When students are in the concrete operational stage we can provide
mathematical problems and finally for the ones aged 12 or more we can purpose
philosophical topics.

Video reflection
Piaget’s cognitive development theory allow us to understand how children learn, act
and help them to develop and carry out their learning process in a competitive way by
providing meaningful material, the necessary experiences and an appropriate guidance
in order they can reach the purposed abilities according to the stage they are.
