Work From Home (WFH) is now a dream of many people, especially for the
current millennial generation does not need to wake up in the morning then take a shower
and get ready to go to the office by crashing the road jams that take up a lot of time. The
coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has indeed created an impact on the importance of
adjustments and maintaining a balance in life. During a critical time like this, companies
have resorted to working from home (WFH) to keep operations rolling and keep
employees safe. Work from home or telecommuting is an alternative work arrangement
where office personnel accomplish tasks elsewhere that are typically done in a central
workplace. Employees use technology to collaborate with different stakeholders of the
company (Gajendran et al., 2015) remotely.

Nielson (2020) has reported that working remotely was merely an extra office perk
before the pandemic. However, after the COVID-19 outbreak, 66% of the employees
surveyed have been forced into full-time remote work. Telecommuting has become a
necessity to keep companies rolling. Owing to rapid advancements in technology, it is
now possible to serve business interests with the internet's power. However, Neeley
(2020) has stressed that adopting telecommuting at a large scale for any organization
will be a tough transition during a crisis

The outcomes of this model can be both positive as well as negative. Positive impacts
include a reduction in traveling time to the office, cost savings, and also childcare (if the
employee is a parent). Whereas the negative impacts include lack of proper
communication among co-workers, health issues, and lack of proper face-to-face
support. Therefore, the present study has been undertaken to examine the impacts of
working from home (WFH) during the COVID-19 pandemic regarding challenges, and
perceived productivity

Working from home (WFH) is also known as telecommuting, teleworking, and
remote working. It has been identified as a flexible work arrangement that enables
employees to work from their residence or a remote location.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has changed the perception towards work. Therefore, it has
also drastically changed how and where the work is being done. This has left the
employees to suddenly adapt to a new model of work with or without any prior
preparation. However, work from home has not been a piece of cake. Some face
problems because of lack of experience, lack of space at home created problems for
some, while inappropriate working conditions led to health issues for others. Hence it is
important to identify the impact and productivity levels of employees towards working
from home. The opinion of employees on working from home and the impacts it had
created plays a vital role in their productivity as well as helping the employers to analyze
where they lack.

Statement of the Problem

Maintaining the overall productivity levels is one of the biggest challenges that
organizations are facing especially in the pandemic situations like Covid-19. Work-life
balance is important for an organization as well as the employees. The most followed
way to maintain the productivity levels as well as ensuring safety is the ‘Work from
home’ model. This study attempts to examine the problems mentioned below.:

i. What is the positive impact of work at home arrangement on employee productivity?

ii. What is the negative impact of work at home arrangement on employee productivity?
iii. What are the factors/challenges affecting the productivity of employee under work at
home arrangement?

on employee productivity.

Significance of the study

This research aims to provide organizations with valuable information and
insights on understanding the benefits and challenges that remote workers face during the
COVID-19 pandemic to enhance remote working practices' effectiveness. Employers
need to create a balance between sustaining normal operations as usual while ensuring
high productivity and healthy psychological wellbeing. Human resource practitioners
with line managers should play a significant role in providing advice, guidance, and
sufficient support to the team members working remotely, through communicating
regularly, not only on work matters but also on psychological issues that are related
to how they manage work remotely, work over-load, their level of stress, home
boundaries, and finally evaluating their ability and productivity while working from
home in addition to providing the appropriate training that facilitates their work, and
a set of recommendations can be applied to offset the challenges of working remotely.

home”, “teleworking”, “remote work” and combinations of these keywords. As these
terms are used interchangeably, it is aimed to access as many sources as possible by the
usage of these keywords. The language of the articles was limited to only English.
Moreover, only relevant articles with the richest content written in years 2016 to 20201
were included in the study.

Research Design/Locale and Population and Sampling

The present study was a cross-sectional and will be based on the responses of 150
respondents working from home belonging to any sectors during COVID 19. It consists
of responses from employees within National Capital Region Plus. Google forms was
used to develop an online semi-structured questionnaire with a consent form appended to
it. The link of the questionnaire will be sent through Viber, messenger, g-mails,
WhatsApp and other online organizational groups to the contacts of the investigators.
Clicking on the link led the participants to fill agree to participate in the survey for this
study. Demographic details were filled in by the participants. A series of questions the
appeared sequentially for the participant to answer.

Since the study was an online study, participants with access to the internet could
possibly participate in the study. The sample selected from the participants were working
from home either full time or skeletal in NCR Plus. The socio-demographic variables
included age, gender, marital status, number of children and work arrangements at
workplace was collected.

Research Instrument and Data Processing Methods

The online self-reported questionnaire developed by the researcher was designed
to collect information or data about impact of work at home on Employee Productivity
during work from home and challenges faced during work from home that affects

productivity exclusively in relevance to work from home during the COVID-19
pandemic. The questionnaire was designed with multiple choices.

The research analysis starts by presenting the frequency and length of working remotely
from home, identifying the significant challenges and benefits experienced while
working remotely. The reliability and validity of the scales used were measured then the
Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated; to end up by conducting simple regression
analysis using JASP software version 14.
