The leopard is a small animal compared to the lion and t he
t iger, but many people t hink t hat it is t he most dangerous of
t h e big cat s. Fo r it s w eight , t he leo pard is on e of t he
st rongest of t he cat s. It is an excellent climber and can run
up a t ree w it h astonishing speed. It can even climb a t ree
w hile carrying a prey t w ice it s ow n w eight . It can leap up
more t han three metres in the air and jump dow n on its prey
from a height of fifteen met res.

The leopard’s skin of greyish gold w it h dark spot s or rings


provides excellent camouflage among the branches of a t ree.
Alt hough t he leopard may be seen during t he day, it is most
act ive at night .

The leopard is part icularly dangerous because it hunt s near


tow ns and villages for dogs. Leopards somet imes can t urn
int o deadly hum an-eat ers. They t errorise large areas for
years. A leopard can easily carry a full-grow n person off into
t he bushes or up a t ree.

The lat e hunt er, Jim Corbet t , w rot e about a leopard t hat
killed 400 people, before he shot it in 1910. Corbett said t hat
hum an-eat ing leopards are rare but very difficult t o st op
because t hey are smart and wary. Such leopards still appear
from t im e t o t im e in India and in Afr ica. How ever, m ost
leopards do not attack people unless provoked or wounded.

One day, a bird-keeper was careless w hen feeding t he king’s


favourit e bird. It escaped from t he cage and f lew aw ay.
When t he king learnt of the incident , he became furious and
immediately ordered t hat t he bird-keeper be executed.

As the news of t he king’s decision spread, people all over the

keeper was brought into t he court room, chained and bound.
His w hole body t rembled as he knelt before t he king. The
minister stepped forward and spoke to t he bird-keeper in a
clear, loud voice for everyone to hear, “ Listen w ell. You have

been careless in your dut ies and have allowed a valuable bird
to escape. This is your first offence.”

“ In addit ion, your negligence has angered your master, t he


king, causing him to have a man executed because of a litt le

their king is cruel and ruthless, since he values a pet far more
t han t he life of a hum an being. This is your t hird offence.
Having committed t hese t hree major offences, you deserve
to die indeed.”

The ent ire cour t room w as silent . Everyone adm ired t he


minister ’s w it and courage. The minister turned towards t he
king and said, “ Your m ajest y, t his man has now heard his
crimes. The execut ion can proceed immediately.”

After hearing the minister ’s speech, t he king was ashamed.


Then, in a calm and sincere voice, he announced t o t he
at t ent ive court , “ The prisoner w ill be freed. I am indeed
fort unate to have my minister ’s w ise counsel. Let everyone
learn from his courage.”
