CHERRIES..!
A cherry is the fruit of many plants of the
genus Prunus, and is a fleshy drupe, any of
various trees belonging to the genus Prunus
and their edible fruits. Commercial

production includes sour cherries (Prunus
Cerasus), which are frozen or canned and
used in sauces and pastries, and sweet
cherries (P. Avium), which are usually
consumed fresh and are the principal type
preserved in true or imitation maraschino
liqueur. A number of species are grown as
ornamentals for their prolific spring flowers,
and the dark red wood of some cherry
species is especially esteemed for the
manufacture of fine furniture. Cherries are
also called as "Prunus". Most cherry species
are native to the Northern Hemisphere,
where they are widely grown.

CHERRIES..!
Some 10 to 12 species are recognized in
North America and a similar number in
Europe. The greatest concentration of

species, however, appears to be in eastern
Asia. The native habitat of the species from
which the cultivated cherries came is
believed to be western Asia and eastern
Europe from the Caspian Sea to the
Balkans. Cherries are grown in all areas of
the world where winter temperatures are not
too severe and where summer temperatures
are moderate. They require winter cold in
order to blossom in spring. The trees bloom
quite early in the spring, just after peaches
and earlier than apples. In Asia, particularly
Japan, cherry varieties have been selected
for the beauty of their flowers, and most of
them do not set fruit.
Types of Cherries
IN INDIA..!
There are 13 most common types of cherry trees in India.

A short note about the BENTON CHERRY TREE
Types of Cherries..! The variety is believed to be developed during the trials conducted at the
Washington State University Prosser Research Center. The tree can grow fairly
large with branches spreading in an upright direction. The leaves are shaped
like lances with relatively notched edges.

BLACK TARTARIAN CHERRY TREE

The Black Tartarian makes a great choice for home orchards. It produces
large, purplish-black fruit with a sweet, rich, full-bodied flavor that is great
for fresh eating and preserves. This cultivar is also the best pollinator for
other dark sweet cherries..

TIBETIAN CHERRY TREE

The Tibetan cherry is one of the small to medium-sized flowering trees with
narrow, willow-type leaves that have an oval-like shape and are approximately
3-4 inches in length. The leaves are a deep medium to dark green. In winter, the
tree's bark is stunning. The tree blooms in late April with small white flowers

VAN CHERRY TREE

These beautiful cherries are a deep crimson-purple in color and grow quite large
in comparison to other sweet cherry varieties. Van is a precocious cherry cultivar
with fruit that is sweet, juicy, and quite large. The Van tree is a modern marvel
among cherries and is widely considered an improvement on the Bing cherry.
A short note about the LAPINS CHERRY TREE
Types of Cherries..! Lapins is a modern cherry variety that was developed to surpass all other dark
sweet cherries in both deliciously sweet flavor, and overall hardiness. Lapins is
a self-pollinating cherry tree, only one needs to be planted in order to grow
fruit. Extra-large and dark-red cherries measure up to an inch in diameter.

YOSHINO CHERRY TREE

The Yoshino cherry is a fast growing deciduous tree that can reach 40–50
ft. Depending on Yoshino cherry cultivars, the showy flowers are white to
pink, single or double, and slightly fragrant. As the flowers wane, the ovate,
serrated, dark green leaves emerge and create a fresh summer canopy.

SARGENT’S CHERRY TREE

The Cherry, Sargent, Prunus sargentii, is not only the hardiest of the ornamental
cherry trees, but also one of the largest and most beautiful. The Sargent
Flowering Cherry tree has polished, rich, chestnut-brown bark and dark green
deciduous leaves that turn red in fall.

JAPANESE CHERRY TREE

Cherry blossoms in Japanese are known as sakura and it would not be an
exaggeration to say they are a national obsession. Different varieties of cherry
blossoms bloom at different times, but most hit their peak in Tokyo at the end of
March to the beginning of April.
A short note about the
SWEETHEART CHERRY TREE
Types of Cherries..! Sweetheart cherry trees, which reach heights and widths of 7 to 10 feet (2-3 m.), are
highly ornamental year round, with beautiful pink and white blooms against a
backdrop of shiny, dark green leaves. The beauty continues with red and orange
autumn leaves, followed by bark that adds textural interest throughout the winter.

HIGAN CHERRY TREE

A remarkable flowering cherry tree, Higan cherry, Prunus x subhirtella, is a
landscape tree with multi-season interest. More cold-hardy and heat tolerant than
most ornamental cherry trees, it is a versatile addition to the landscape. Higan
cherry is a medium-sized deciduous tree that can reach 20-30 ft.

ATTIKA CHERRIES TREE

Attika Cherry Care: How To Grow An Attika Cherry Tree. If you're looking for a
new, dark sweet cherry to grow in your backyard orchard, look no further than
kordia cherries, also known as Attika. Attika cherry trees produce abundant,
long, heart-shaped dark cherries with a strong, sweet flavor.
Sweet Cherry

The Sweet Cherry Trees are deciduous in nature, with

their deep and beautiful green leaves developing

SWEET CHERRY
during the spring months. By fall, the same leaves take
bronze and golden hue. The Sweet cherry tree is known
to bloom early during the spring months with their
exceptionally fragrant, white flowers. They tend to
bloom in tiny clusters with long branches, making way
for beautiful clumps of bright, sweet cherries.
Usually, the size, structure, and hue of the sweet cherry
fruit tend to vary depending on the type of specie. For
instance, Stella Sweet cherry is known to produce the
largest amount of fruits donning a deep and perfectly
red color. The Black Tartarian specie on the other
hand, produces fruits of similar size, but with a unique
orangish-red hue. Thanks to hue, the cherries from
these species appear more like tiny tomatoes than
actual cherries in general.
Sweet Cherries produce incredibly
delectable cherries that may be
best consumed as fresh fruit.
Unlike other common variants of
cherries that are often eaten as
jams or pies, sweet cherries are
SWEET CHERRY

best consumed raw. You will find

multiple variants of these trees,
with heights ranging from 18 feet
to 35 feet. Sweet cherry trees take
the natural shape of the pyramid
and they are primarily grown as
small and medium trees.
Interestingly, in some instances,
you can train the sweet cherry tree
to fan out against a large wall or
a fence.
Vandalay Cherry

The Vandalay cherry tree was first created during the

late nineties by Doctor Ghassem Tehrani. He named
the tree after one of his favorite colleagues in the

VANDALAY CHERRY
Horticultural Institute of Research, Ontario. This is yet
another popular variant of cherry tree that was known
to be developed from cross-pollination between the
Van and Stella variants of the tree. The Vandalay
Cherries are known for producing fruits with a deep
reddish hue on the exteriors and the wine-red colored
flesh. They resemble kidneys and are deemed highly
attractive. These cherries are also incredibly sweet and
delicious. You can either eat them directly from the
tree or extract the pulp for sweetmeats and pastries.
While the Vandalay cherries do not have any specific
growing criteria and are fairly easy to maintain, you
will need to have a clear idea about their required cold
hardiness zones, if you plan to cultivate them.
For the uninitiated, Vandalay
cherries thrive best in US hardiness
zones ranging from 5 to 9. So, if
you are a gardener living in these
zones, you might as well want to
add this to your home orchard. The
VANDALAY CHERRY

cherries will start ripening by mid-

July like other sweet cherry
variants. Also note that while the
Vandalay cherry is commonly
known to be a self-pollinator, you
are likely to get larger harvests if
you cross it with a pollinator. For
cross-pollination, you can use
multiple variants like Bing, Stella,
Napoleon, and others.
Goodness of PACKED WITH NUTRIENTS
Cherries are small stone fruits that come in a variety of
Sweet Cherry and colors and flavors. There are two major categories — tart
and sweet cherries, or Prunus cerasus L. and Prunus avium
Vandalay Cherry L., respectively. Their colors can vary from yellow to deep
blackish-red. All varieties are highly nutritious and packed
with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients,
particularly fiber, vitamin C, and potassium, benefit health
in many ways. Vitamin C is essential for maintaining your
immune system and skin health while potassium is needed
for muscle contraction, nerve function, blood pressure
regulation, and many other critical bodily processes.
Cherries are also a good source of fiber, which helps keep
your digestive system healthy by fueling beneficial gut
bacteria and promoting bowel regularity, they provide
vitamins B, manganese, copper, magnesium, and vitamin K.

GOODNESS OF CHERRIES
RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS AND ANTI-
Goodness of INFLAMMATORY COMPOUNDS

Sweet Cherry and The high concentration of plant compounds in cherries may be
responsible for this fruit’s many health benefits. Though the

Vandalay Cherry amount and type can vary depending on the variety, all cherries
are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.
This high antioxidant content may help combat oxidative stress,
a condition that is linked to multiple chronic diseases and
premature aging. In fact, one review found that eating cherries
effectively reduced inflammation in 11 out of 16 studies and
markers of oxidative stress in 8 out of 10 studies. Cherries are
especially high in polyphenols, a large group of plant chemicals
that help fight cellular damage, reduce inflammation, and
promote overall health. In fact, polyphenol-rich diets may
protect against many chronic conditions, including heart disease,
diabetes, mental decline, and certain cancers. These stone fruits
also contain carotenoid pigments like beta-carotene and vitamin
C, both of which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
properties as well.

GOODNESS OF CHERRIES
CAN BOOST EXERCISE RECOVERY
Goodness of Research shows that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds
in cherries may help relieve exercise-induced muscle pain, damage, and
Sweet Cherry and inflammation. Tart cherries and their juice seem to be more effective
than sweet varieties, though both may aid athletes. Tart cherry juice and
Vandalay Cherry concentrate have been found to accelerate muscle recovery, decrease
exercise-induced muscle pain, and prevent strength loss in elite athletes,
such as cyclists and marathon runners. Additionally, some evidence
suggests that cherry products may enhance exercise performance. A
study in 27 endurance runners demonstrated that those who consumed
480 mg of powdered tart cherries daily for 10 days before a half-
marathon averaged 13% faster race times and experienced less muscle
soreness than a placebo group. Though most studies exploring the links
between cherries and exercise involve trained athletes, tart cherry juice
may benefit non-athletes as well. A study in 20 active women noted that
those who drank 2 ounces (60 ml) of tart cherry juice twice daily for 8
days recovered quicker and had less muscle damage and soreness after
completing repeated sprint exercises, compared to the placebo group
Though promising, these findings are related to concentrated cherry
products, such as juice and powder. It’s unclear how many fresh cherries
you would need to eat to produce similar results.

GOODNESS OF CHERRIES
MAY BENEFIT HEART HEALTH
Goodness of Increasing your intake of nutrient-dense fruits like cherries is a tasty
way to protect your heart. Many studies show that diets rich in fruits
Sweet Cherry and are associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. Cherries are
particularly beneficial in this regard, as they’re rich in nutrients and
Vandalay Cherry compounds that are known to promote heart health, including
potassium and polyphenol antioxidants. Just 1 cup (154 grams) of
pitted, sweet cherries provides 10% of the DV for potassium, a
mineral that is essential for keeping your heart healthy. It’s needed
to maintain a regular heartbeat and helps remove excess sodium
from your body, regulating your blood pressure. This is why higher
intakes of potassium have been associated with a reduced risk of
heart disease and stroke. What’s more, cherries are rich in powerful
polyphenol antioxidants, including anthocyanins, flavonols, and
catechins, which may help keep your heart healthy by protecting
against cellular damage and reducing inflammation. In fact, a study
in 84,158 people found that higher intakes of polyphenols —
especially anthocyanins, flavonols, and catechins — were associated
with a significantly decreased risk of heart disease over 5 years.

GOODNESS OF CHERRIES
MAY IMPROVE SYMPTOMS OF ARTHRITIS
Goodness of AND GOUT

Sweet Cherry and Due to their potent anti-inflammatory effects, cherries may reduce

Vandalay Cherry symptoms of arthritis and gout, a type of arthritis caused by a buildup
of uric acid that can lead to extreme swelling, inflammation, and pain in
your joints. Many studies show that cherries help inhibit oxidative stress
and decrease inflammation by suppressing inflammatory proteins,
which can help reduce symptoms related to arthritis, they can decrease
uric acid levels in your body, making them especially beneficial for
those with gout. A study in 10 women found that eating 2 servings (10
ounces or 280 grams) of sweet cherries after an overnight fast lowered
levels of the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) and
significantly reduced uric acid levels 5 hours after consumption.Another
study in 633 people with gout demonstrated that those who ate fresh
cherries over 2 days had 35% fewer gout attacks than those who did not
consume the fruit.
Additionally, the study revealed that when cherry intake was combined
with the gout medication allopurinol, gout attacks were 75% less likely
than during periods when neither cherries or allopurinol were consumed

GOODNESS OF CHERRIES
MAY IMPROVE SLEEP QUALITY
Goodness of
Sweet Cherry and Eating cherries or drinking tart cherry juice may help improve your
Vandalay Cherry the fruit’s high concentration of plant compounds. Additionally,
sleep quality. These sleep-promoting benefits may be attributed to

cherries contain melatonin, a substance that helps regulate your

sleep-wake cycle. A study in 20 people showed that those who drank
tart cherry juice concentrate for 7 days experienced significant
increases in melatonin levels, sleep duration, and sleep quality,
compared to a placebo. Similarly, a 2-week study in older adults
with insomnia found that drinking 1 cup (240 ml) of tart cherry juice
before bed increased sleep time by 84 minutes. However, these
studies use concentrated cherry products. It’s unclear whether
eating fresh cherries before bed would have the same effect.
Ultimately, more studies are needed to better understand how
consuming cherries and cherry products may benefit sleep.
