RECRUITING IN A COMPETITIVE

ENVIRONMENT

HRM

By:
Describe what Company X should have done to maintain the candidate’s
interest in the position.
Company X should have expressed the positive and negative sides of the position to the candidate. As
well as present the candidate with the challenges and rewards of the position and what is expected of
the candidate. This can result in many cases to an encouragement of the candidate to join the
company.
On the other hand, the company can speed up its recruitment processes specially if the find a suitable
candidate and was in a highly competitive industry in which companies strive to hire the best suitable
candidates. The idea behind speeding up the recruitment process is to fill up positions faster and
improve the company ability to hire suitable talents in the industry at the right time and before
competitors offer them another offer.
In case of the increased demand for talents and the number of candidates are lower than the number of
positions in the industry. Then companies must deliver better compensation to the candidate and
deliver better working environment. This is going to make it much more difficult for the recruitment
department to hire suitable candidates especially when there are companies offering better
compensation plans and better work environment.
Finally, the company must review its recruitment process, compensation plan, and the resources of
recruitment. ((McKay,2022)

What should the candidate’s mentor have advised him to do?

The mentor should advise the candidate to be honest with both companies and develop his
communication skills with the hiring companies. As a result, it will be better for the candidate career
path as the trust between the candidate and the other companies will not be compromised. Also, the
mentor must consider that the candidate might need to go back to company x again and because
company Y has learned about the situation that happen between the candidate and company x then the
candidate might be in a difficult position and embarrassing situation in front of his new employer.
The mentor must not consider delaying the reply to company x but he must consider being straight
forward with them even though it will be hard on company x and it might get them angry, but if the
candidate was apologetic and nice enough as well as being honest then the result will be better and
they will accept the situation that the candidate is viewing from his side.
The dynamics of this can be very difficult but both the company and the employee will resolve this
issue and it will give the company the opportunity to look back at what is wrong with their process.
(McKay,2022)

What would you have done if you had been in the candidate’s position?
If I was in the candidate place, I will consider the following scenarios:

 First, If I was not interested in the position and the company, then I will apologize directly
even before receiving another offer. As a result, if I was not interested in the position or the
company I will not be engaged and will not devote my efforts to get better at what I do.
 Second, if I was interested in the position but the company environment or process does not
suite me, then I will also apologize and consider alternative options to save both my and the
organization time. This is because the environment of the company is a major player in the
employee productivity.
 Third, From the beginning I will not apply for a position that some how does not fill my needs
and ambitions that can affect my career negatively.
 Forth, As we have mentioned before if all things are equal but I feel some how connected to
the other company then I will be honest with the first company and apologize for rejecting
their offer.
 Finally, career path decisions are primarily depends on the candidate ambitions and the
market situation. If there is a high demand then the candidate will have more than one
attractive choice. And if the market is down and the supply of talent is higher than the
demand then the career choices will be different and candidates must accept what is available.
